    1. Peter CARRINGTON
    2. Anne Napier
    3. Hello all Looking for any information re the immigration of a Mr Peter CARRINGTON who arrived in Australia c1828. He was born in Liverpool, England, c1808. He married in Nov 1853 Trinity Church, Adelaide SA, to Charlotte DRINKWATER. Their marriage certificate states that he was a 45 y.o. bachelor and that his occupation was a smith. Charlotte was 29 and I have traced her arrival to the ship "Marion" which arrived in Adelaide in Feb 1849 from England. She was apparently born in Ireland. Peter died in Wentworth NSW in 1886 and his death certificate states that he had been in the Colony of NSW for 57 years. I have been unable to locate any trace of him arriving in Adelaide, so am now looking to Sydney and other ports. Also, I understand that the date of 1828 would have been unlikely for a SA arrival. Is there a chance that he may have been a convict? If he did arrive in Syd or Melb, would there be a record of him having travelled (if by ship) to Adelaide? Any info much appreciated. Anne Napier Victoria

    3. Dear Listers, I am new to this list and hoping for some advice as to how I can find out the name of a particular ship which left either Ireland or England in 1860 and was wrecked off the coast of Brazil. I have read that some or all of the passengers were transferred to the ship the Wigtownshire which arrived in Victoria December 1860. I'm hoping someone will be able to tell me the name of the ship which was wrecked off Brazil. Many thanks. Janet

G'day Bob, About 1907 the Light Cruiser "Encounter" was on loan to the 'fledgling' Australian RAN as a training Vessel.( remained that state until 1918) Some of its British crew had been seconded to RAN were based at a shore base at Williamstown. I had found this intrigung As a guy known to be born in NFK,England, worked in London, Died in London and was buried in the place of his Birth( NFK) yet returned a Naval History in Australia. This is being written very much on the "fly" so the 1918 date is from memory but hope it might be of help, BFN John Bob Cunning wrote: > Hello from Melbourne . 3. Lynne, Again thank you. I also found "the" Lord Amherst in the National Archives of Australia, in 1959 in a photograph looking at a couple of surf boards held by Life Savers, at Newport Beach, with him was the Duke of Abercorn. I have also found an Amherst Street in Sydney and there is a small mining town in Victoria called Amherst. There was also an Amherst hospital on the Goldfields. Also, a town in W.A. which has been renamed Glen Forest. Not sure if these places are named after the Amherst family who visited here, or after the 1st Earl, who defeated the French in Canada. He named his estate in Kent in England "Montreal" and was the great grandfather of the Lord Amherst I am interested in. I would like to find the ships they arrived on. Though around the late 1930s, being as wealthy as this family is, I suppose they could have flown here. Thanks again. 3. Hi again Lynn, The H Langrish looks promising as his age is close, I have found a lot of immigrants put their age back so they would he accepted. I found this very much so with the Bounty Immigrants. Was the "Geelong" an international ship or a coastal ship, do you know? 3. Lyne, Thank you so much for all this information, it is very much appreciated. So the Countess arrived in Fremantle in 1933. Wonder where hubby was? H Langrish could be Henry, though he is alone, 1910 is good for the year too. Maybe, he came out first to test the land.
