    3. Hi all I am hoping that someone may be able to help me. I am looking for when my Grandmother and her son and her sister arrived in Australia. No-one in the family knows as it was not talked about. When my Grandmother died an envelope was found in her handwriting "Arrived Australia June 28 1928 on the Bendigo" However my Grandmother did not seem very good with dates and even celebrated 2 of her sons birthdays on the wrong day and month and it wasn't known until they had to have their birth certificates. I have researched as much as I can and it seems that the Bendigo may have arrived around that time. I was wondering if someone has some information that can allow me to confirm their arrival and the route they took as it seems they did not come through Western Australia. Once I can confirm this I can go looking for my Grandfather who came out 6-12 months before his wife and on who I have no details at all. below are the details Gladys Swarbrick KNIGHT (born 1905) traveling with an infant son Kenneth KNIGHT ( born 1925) and her sister Edna DAWSON (born 1907) possibly arrived in Australia JUNE 28 1928 on the SS Bendigo. My Grandfather arrived somewhere between June 1927 to February 1928 he was Clifford Hill KNIGHT and travelled with Frank RYAN (Edna's fiancee) Thanks Michele Dasey Broken Hill NSW

Hi Peggy and Max The Shipping Gazette (NSW) of 8 Jan 1855 has an entry of the Ebba Brah Have a look at http://www.nla.gov.au/ferguson/14403897/18550108/e0120557/1-4.pdf Also, apparently, the Ocean Monarch is simular to the Ebba Brah, being built slightly later by the same yard. 1. Immigration Depots
    2. Dear Listers I have found these 2 works very useful in understanding the migrants experience both awaiting the voyage out and the arrival Pescod, Keith Good Food, Bright Fires and Civility: British emigrant depots of the 19th century 2001) details the process of emigration from Britain to Australia under the organisation of the British Colonial Office in the mid -nineteenth century. Extracts from emigrants' diaries describe their final days in the depots before departure, and official correspondence reveals British government attitudes of the time regarding the emigration schemes. Pescod, Keith A place to lay my head : immigrant shelters of nineteenth century Victoria [2003) explores the nature of the austere immigration depots in Victoria where immigrants found temporary shelter. The gold rushes put added pressure on the accommodation resulting in both government and private buildings.Regards Marilyn

    3. This is new info for me - have tried the link you supplied John, but can't locate The Vagabond Papers. What sort of timelines are we talking here btw, I have ggparents who were married in Cornwall in October 1862, & first child was born Bendigo March 1865, so they must have emigrated between those dates - but how do I find out exactly when, and on what ship. I am pretty sure they were unassisted emigrants. Names: William & Annie HARVEY, Wm born 1838, Annie born 1839, both in Cornwall. I know Annie spent one year in New Zealand, (from her death cert) so it is possible they went to NZ first. Would so appreciate any advice on this 'brick wall'. Two distinct facilities existed.. 1. Immigrant Depot- Situated nr Spencer & Lt Bourke Essentially as a short term" labour agency" or transitory accommodation for Passengers awaiting passage to other ports. ( Charges/Conditions would be very much dependant on the period) "Upon their arrival, the Hopes were permitted to remain in an immigrant depot after they had disembarked. In Melbourne these were situated in King Street, Princes Bridge, Carlton and Batman's Hill, although it is not known where the Hopes stayed. They were allowed to stay until they had secured employment, but this usually involved a maximum stay of around 10 days. Strict rules governed this accommodation which forbade alcohol, fraternisation and fires and lights after 9.00pm. The inmates could not refuse a job offer and were expected to rise at 7.00am for muster and perform given duties till breakfast at 9.00am. Usually the rest of the day was free. Disobedience of these rules meant dismissal from the depot. Several passengers on board the /S.S. Atalanta/ were dismissed from the depot, some being absent from the morning muster and some for being drunk." 2. 3. Hello there, Where do I start? I guess that's my question as a first timer. I'm trying to track down info about family members arriving in australia in the late 1800's and early 1900's from Germany and Ireland. Any links to info about this would really be appreciated. Looking for: Patrick Foley, born 1892 or 1893, Killorglin Ireland, came to australia, early 1900's and joined the australian army in 1915. Brigid or Bridget (both spellings have been used), O'sullivan, born in Cahriciveen, Ireland and came to australia early 1900's. ...both settled on the atherton tablelands in queensland Also the Chardon Family, from neckarsulm in germany, came by ship to Australia in the mid to late 1800's, three brothers, John Henry and two others. They settled in the Mt Morgan, Rockhampthon area. I think they all came by ship into Brisbane. Sorry info isn't more specific, I'm tracking down more now through family and birth, death, marraiges etc. thanks for any help to come my way which I know I'll pass on to others in time to come danella connors
