Hi Janice, Just doing a "Google" search of the Ganges and found the following site, which lists a Agnes Shales, but no mention of her being Thomas Parnell alias John Williams wife. Have a look http://www.home.gil.com.au/~rkbt/arrivals.html It was updated today. Kind regards, Lynne ----- Original Message ----- From: "Janice Doughty" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, November 06, 2005 3:12 PM Subject: Re: [AUS-IMM-SHIPS] Ganges > Hi Annette, > > Thank you so much for your offer Annette, I would be very grateful. Hi Janice, From Charles Bateson's "The Convict Ships" The Arrivals, 1797-1800 Ganges, Arrived 2 June 1798, Ship 700ton, Master Thomas Patrickson, Surgeon James Mileham. Ganges was built in India, 1792 launched. The Ganges was one of the first convict ships inspected at Portsmouth by Sir James Fitzpatrick, the Home Department's surgeon-general. He ordered certain structural alterations, and placed aboard ventilators, water purifiers, fumigants and medicines. The Ganges embarked 203 men, but her master and part-owner, Thomas Patrickson, asked that her complement should be raised to 300. Fortunately, his request was refused, and as she was a ship of 700tons, she was not overcrowded when she sailed. Thirteen convicts died on the voyage, and many of the survivors were suffering from scurvy on arrival. Her surgeon, James Mileham, who was going out to join the Colonial Medical Establishment, probably was inexperienced in the management of a large body of men at sea, and if another 100 men had been embarked, it seems certain that the death toll in the Ganges would have been much heavier. Shipping Arrivals & Departures, Sydney by JS Clumston Ganges arrival 2/6/1797, From Ireland via Cape of Goodhope, Cargo Convicts; Det.NSW Corps. Beef & Pork. Departed August for China. So one has from Portsmouth and one Ireland. I think Portsmouth, is the correct one. Out at State Records, Kingswood and probably down The Rocks office also they have some photo copies of early passenger lists in folders labelled COD and a number I know in these is the passenger list of a ship named 'Adam Lodge' that came here abt 1836 carrying assisted migrants BUT wasnt included in the Bounty indexes for some reason In Gosford library there are 2 x State Records films of the names of and the dates of arrival to Port of Sydney of ships indexed in blocks of 5 years . Also are some books on arrivals of ships ........ Just cant remember if there is a book with 1839 arrivals ?? Been a while since I last checked Bye MargM Beautiful Central Coast of NSW
Thanks for the help Stephanie, though they are not my McNabs. All the information I have was from a phone call I made to an 87 year old McNab. He has the family bible which I will never see unfortunately. His eyes are failing as you would expect at that age. He told me this Alexander and his wife Maria/Marion/Mary McNab and their son arrived somewhere in the colonies in Dec 1837. Their daughter Catherine was born 1 Jan 1838 28 days after they arrived here. If it is at all possible I would like to know where they sailed from (I assume Scotland), what ship, the names on the passenger lists, and when and where they arrived. I have been searching the net for any info on them and cant find any, so any help is really appreciated. Sue Central Coaster
Hi Sue, I have searched Di Cummings disc "Bound for south Australia", from 1836 to 1842 There were 2 McNAB's on the Indus from Dundee, arriving Adelaide January 24, 1839, "John and wife". Hi Annette, Thank you so much for your offer Annette, I would be very grateful. At the moment I am researching Thomas Parnell (alias John Williams) and his wife Agnes, who sailed under her maiden name, Agnes Shales with thier baby son Thomas. Dr. James Mileham the "Ganges" ship's surgeon, was so grateful for the assistance that Thomas Parnell (alias John Williams) was able to give him on the voyage, with helping him tend the sick convicts, he became his mentor and close friend and helped Thomas to finish his studies to become a physician and surgeon, which he had started back in England. Thomas father was Dr. John Parnell and his brother at the time of his arrest was also studying with Thomas to be in the medical profession. Thomas, at the time of his arrest, lied about his age, his name and his profession to protect his family from the shame of his arrest, trial and sentence of transportation for Life. In 1814, under the name of "...Thomas Parnell, otherwise John Williams he was granted a Conditional Pardon..." I am at the moment filling in the story of the voyage on the Ganges. My brother in law's ggg grandfather was also a soldier on board this ship in 1797. Hello fellow listers, I am hoping that someone can assist me please. I am looking for information regarding the McNab family Alexander, Maria or Marion and son Alexander. They arrived in Australia in about December 1837 from Scotland. Any information would be of great assistance. I have been to all the usual sites and searched but with no luck so far. Thanks in advance, Sue
Hi Janice, I do not know for certain what month the Granges sailed but it would have been around the beginning of February as they were at sea for 5 months. Yes she sailed from Portsmouth. I have some more information on this ship that I could give you if you are interested as my husbands GreatGr. Gr. Grandfather came out on her as a soldier. Hello again - I did say I was new to all this didn't I? I forgot to add that I am also looking for information - passenger list if possible - for the Mary Pleasants which arrived in Australia 1856. My ggrandfather Benjamin Rayner came out on her and the family believe it was 1856. I have found a record of the Mary Pleasants arrival at Botany Bay on 16.11.1858 - maybe this is the year he arrived - most entries I have found referring to the Mary Pleasants have been for the U.S.A. (Unless there were two ships "Mary Pleasant" and "Mary Pleasants"????) How can I get copies of the passenger lists? I hope someone can help. Thanks Val
Goodmorning all from Maryborough, Queensland, Australia This is my first time on so if I make booboos please excuse as I'm not sure what is required. I am trying to back-track on my ggrandmother Ida Fuhrmann who came out from Germany at sometime between December 1890 and January 1893. I believe she landed in Victoria but that is all that I know. I did pick up on a Frau Fuhrmann aged 29 who arrived on the Habsburg in December 1893 (from the Victorian Public Records Office). Does anyone know if I can find out Frau Fuhrmann's christian name? It will certainly throw the family history as we know it now out of kilter if this is my ggrandmother as it is believed she arrived at least 11 months prior to this. many thanks Val
