    1. Re: [AUS-IMM-SHIPS] JAMES CAMPBELL- Info on
    2. Bob Howland
    3. Hi Marg There is a James Campbell in the 1841 Census at Sutton Forest and I got a copy of an Insolvency at the Archives for James Campbell of the Prince Prince Albert Inn, Berrima Road 1860 "Late of Campbelltown". At this stage I can't prove a connection. Henry Campbell married Jane Wallace Ure at Paradise near Inverell in 1861, they had 15 children. Henry's death certificate gave his parents as James Campbell, hotelkeeper and Mary Shaw and stated Campbelltown was his birth place. 3. Thank you MargM I have records for the convicts but according to a list of British Bounty Emigrants, extracted from British Parliamentary Papers, who came to NSW between 1825 and 1832 there was a James Campbell weaver, family 6 at a price of 20 pounds. I'm not sure how to find the ship the family was on, I've searched microfilms containing Bounty Immigrants for that period at the Archives and the local library, without success. My great grandfather was born in Campbelltown c1833 parents James Campbell hotelkeeper and Mary Shaw. No one in the family has been able to trace Henry's parents or siblings (if there were any). 3. Liz, I got my information about the arrival of my relies from the shipping indexes in the Victorian archives. I think the web site is http://proarchives.imagineering.com.au . From the indexes I looked up copies of the original records on microfiche at the Victorian Archives Centre which is at the top end of Spring St. I don't know anything about Elizabeth McMillan from Scotland except that her immigration record is found in Vol 11 p162 in the archives for the "Gambia" assisted-passengers and she was to work as a domestic for Joseph Hall. 3. Hi - This is not of much value, because imprecise, but there is a book about the Highlands and Islands Emigration Scheme (HIES) which brought Scots out in the late forties and early fifties, at the time of the Clearances - there is some good material on the quarantine procedures, in it. My lot came on Ontario, departing Liverpool 3.8.1852. There were many deaths on board and of course a spell in quarantine on NSW Head, 26.11.1982-15.12.1852. I hope this helps a little - Lois > > > > > ===

    1. Re: [AUS-IMM-SHIPS] McCance, 1853, "Marion Moore" or "Confiance"?

    3. Liz, I don't have anything concrete about quarantining of "Marion Moore" passengers except that there were 19 deaths (mainly children & infants) and susposedly other sickness, but I can't think of another explanation why members of the McCance/McMillan family were processed through customs from two ships yet they were all listed as passengers on the "Marion Moore". The "Marion Moore" left Liverpool on 15/11/1852 and the "Confiance" on 8/12/1852. There were 27 deaths on the "Confiance" and many cases of whooping cough, dysentery and scurvy requiring the whole ship to be officially quarantined (from a google search & other family members). I think that although there were some sick passengers on the "Marion Moore" who needed to be quarantined (including the McCances & younger McMillans) it wasn't serious enough to quarantine the whole ship as with th "Confiance". Since both ships sailed from Liverpool, other family members have suggested that, because of overbooking on the "Marion Moore", the McCances were held over until the "Confiance" left. I disagree with this, since I can't see why a shipping company would split up a family when there would've been other alternatives but still leave them on the passenger list, and without even considering the difficulties of a poor Irish family staying in Liverpool for another three weeks after the "Marion Moore" left. He is on a list of Emmigrants from Britain & Ireland during that period extracted from British parliamentary papers. The only information given apart from statistics is that he was part of a family of 6 and the bounty sum was 20 pounds.
