    1. [AUS-IMM-SHIPS] LOWE and JEFFREY, TASMANIA
    2. rosemary tearle
    3. Hi, Can anyone help in finding when James LOWE and Janet Smart JEFFREY (and possibly her sister Jane/Jean Hill JEFFREY) came to Tasmania from Scotland. James and Janet married at Launceston on 23 Feb 1857 and their son, James Robert was born 22 Nov 1857. James senior was a schoolmaster on the birth reg. James was born about 1825 and Janet about 1842, according to their death certificates. They came to Dunedin/Otago, New Zealand about 1866, again, according to their death certificates. I have looked on the ShipsList and tried various rootsweb archives. Is there a Tasmanian state archive I could access on the internet? Many thanks. Rosemary Tearle Far North New Zealand.

    1. [AUS-IMM-SHIPS] From Ireland to Dungog, but how?
    2. Peter & Robin Solman
    3. Hi Listers, I've been trying to help my husband's stepmother find information on her ggggrandfather Patrick Levey, b. abt 1816 in Ireland. He married Mary Anne Atkins b. abt 1820 in Dungog, NSW and their son James Levey was born 1840 in Dungog. We've tried to find his name on passenger lists, but, I'm really not that knowledgeable on how to use them or where really to look, so, it's been quite hit & miss. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thank you, Robin

    3. I am trying to find some information on Sorren Thorsen (or Sarron Thorsen). He married Mary (Minnie) Kerr in Victoria in 1890. According to his Naturalisation Papers (1902) he arrived in Victoria on 11th January 1887 by the ship Eira from Drammen, Norway. Does anyone have any details of this ship and it's voyage? Catherine

    3. http://www.adb.online.anu.edu.au/biogs/A130546b.htm In May-June 1942 the Commonwealth government introduced uniform taxation. Queensland was one of four States which immediately but unsuccessfully challenged the measure in the High Court of Australia. Although Queensland accepted the decision, Forgan Smith decided to resign and on 9 September Cooper was elected leader. He became premier on 16 September 1942; he was, at 70, the oldest person to take this office for the first time. Cooper co-operated closely with Curtin, supporting him at A.L.P. and premiers' conferences, even when the Queensland central executive opposed the decision taken by the A.L.P. federal conference in January 1943 to permit the Militia to serve in the South-West Pacific Area. After a conference of Federal and State governments, in November the Commonwealth called for a referral of powers for the duration of the war and five years thereafter. In the following months only Queensland and New South Wales passed the necessary draft amending bill. Cooper subsequently campaigned, with his Federal colleagues, in the unsuccessful referendum held on 14 August 1944. 3. Hi Leanne, I had a look on Discharged & Deserted Seamen Qld. Vols. 1 & 2, 1882-1913, He is listed there, sorry for taking so long to answer. Apologise for not finding this entry earlier. Entry has (1882-1892), compiled by Margaret Verran, from Seamen's Register Qld. State Archives, records reference HAR/2. Does not say if there is further information, I assume there would be. The page number given is that on the records. Badcock, J E., age 14, ship Ullock, date 26/08/1884, Brisbane, page 055. Kind regards, Lynne. 3. Try the court and police records, and the government gazettes. The latter advertised regularly for seamen who deserted ship, most particularly naval vessels. Those apprehended were brought before the courts, hence they often appear in the police and court records. You can also try jail records, as many had to serve time in gaol if their ship had already sailed. cheers Jenny Fawcett ----- Original Message ----- From: "Leanne&Geoff" <meltre@bigpond.net.au> To: <AUS-IMMIGRATION-SHIPS@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, April 15, 2007 11:24 AM Subject: [AUS-IMM-SHIPS] deserted seamen > Does anyone who where I will find records for deserted seamen in Brisbane? > > Thanks Leanne > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to AUS-IMMIGRATION-SHIPS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message >
