    1. [AUS-IMM-SHIPS] Stowaway 1855
    2. Lynne Thompson
    3. I have just found my 3xgrandfather was a stowaway on the "Victoria" in 1855, I have seen the shipping record and there is nothing more mentioned. My questions are: Would this have made the papers at the time or was it too common place? Would he have been charged? Where would I look to find any more information? Thank you Lynne SA

    3. Hello Josie There does not appear to be a transcription that I can see, you may have to purchase the list from SA State Records. The Alice Brooks sailed from Singapore and the SA Register has a list on 01/10/1855, The SA State records has on the Nimrod - GRG35/48/00001/9 passenger list 56/2 Elizabeth, Gilbert, Jane, John and Maria. it arrived on 1 Jan 1856. 3. Hi Found them! The Bourneup sailed from Liverpool, 1495 tons, Master Robert Biddy. They arrived in Geelong on the 3rd of September. They were from Yorkshire, Church of England and James was a Agricultural Labourer. They were engaged (sponsered?) by Thomas Fleming. Borrabul Hills, Geelong. The wage was 40 pounds per year for 3 years and he was engaged "with family". You get heaps more information for assisted passengers than you do with unassisted! I guess that figures because the convicts were the most documented people of all! 3. Good Morning, Brian, Thank you very much - sometimes dates of special happenings within a family can only be remembered by momentous outside events, as I am discovering. Thank you for the website, I will obtain much use of it in the future. After delving back to the 1700`s with the family tree 1942 seems such a trivial date by comparison, yet needed! As the list of 'things to do at the State Library' becomes longer and longer I may need to camp there for a week or more!! Cheers, Dee. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Brian Rhynehart" <brianr@cyberone.com.au> To: <aus-immigration-ships@rootsweb.com> Sent: 05 May, 2007 12:37 AM Subject: Re: [AUS-IMM-SHIPS] Election > Good evening Dee, > > This period falls between the 16th & 17th Federal Parliaments therefore the > election you seek is probably a state election. 3. Good evening Dee, This period falls between the 16th & 17th Federal Parliaments therefore the election you seek is probably a state election. Try Brisbane newspapers for the period at the State Library. James and Janet married at Launceston on 23 Feb 1857 and their son, James Robert was born 22 Nov 1857. James senior was a schoolmaster on the birth reg. James was born about 1825 and Janet about 1842, according to their death certificates. They came to Dunedin/Otago, New Zealand about 1866, again, according to their death certificates. I have looked on the ShipsList and tried various rootsweb archives. Is there a Tasmanian state archive I could access on the internet? Many thanks. He married Mary Anne Atkins b. abt 1820 in Dungog, NSW and their son James Levey was born 1840 in Dungog. We've tried to find his name on passenger lists, but, I'm really not that knowledgeable on how to use them or where really to look, so, it's been quite hit & miss. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. He married Mary (Minnie) Kerr in Victoria in 1890. According to his Naturalisation Papers (1902) he arrived in Victoria on 11th January 1887 by the ship Eira from Drammen, Norway. Does anyone have any details of this ship and it's voyage?
