Jenny, You will probably find that his name was originally MÜLLER where the U with has 2 dots above and it is called an U-Umlatt. In certain cases it was rendered in Oz speak as a U, as a UE or I depending upon port of arrival, the political mood of the moment ore the desire for a single pronounciation of ones name. Young Charly may have been a relative of Von Mueller, along with all the other Millers, Mullers and Muellers in Australia but then again I am not related to Tony Jones, Lord Snowdon (but then again?). I am not sure how to do an U-umlatt search of the Rostock phone book but most searchers will accept a u to search U only, or U umlatt, cheers Col -----Original Message----- From: Jenny Williams [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, 16 June 2002 10:15 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [AUS-GERMAN] (AUS-GERMAN) MUELLER Hello, I need help here. I have Charles Christian Frederick MILLER born c1828 in Rostock, Germany. A shipwright, he arrived in Tasmania from England on the "Heather Bell" in 1855. I think his real name is Carl Christian Fredrick MUELLER. Baron Ferdinand Von Mueller, the famous Victorian Botanist, was actually born in Rostock too under the name of just MUELLER, the Von came later along with his title. I think these 2 must be connected. Maybe cousins. The Baron's parents were Fredrick MUELLER & Louisa MERTENS & young Fred was brought up by his grandparent, Christopher. My Carl's parents were listed as Henry & Jean BARD on his MC but 2 of his children carry Christopher as a second name. I did try the Mecklenberg Mailing List but gave up as I can't read the German messages. Anyone got any ideas of how to find the MUELLER family in Rostock? Jenny
