Hello Listers I am trying to find where my g.gfather was born. On his death certificate in 1896, his place of birth was shown as Hamburg, the informant was a man he had worked with, his wife had died 20 years earlier. Checking on the IGI,I couldn't find any match for him. I have checked the Naturalisation records, and found him there,it seems he paid his own way to Australia, and a check of the shipping records for 1863 doesn't list him at all. There are no parents listed on either his marriage or death certificates. All of this information about my g.gfather I have found since my Mum died 5 years ago and there are no relatives alive that I can ask to help me. I have been in touch by mail with a couple of Bussman's I found in the telephone directories,they are not related to my George and can help me no further. Jenny - when you say you have "checked naturalisation records" do you mean you have obtained copies of his naturalisation papers? They should give you the best reliable starting detail on him, because he would have supplied it himself. No parents on marriage records is curious though. Civil record? If so, I suggest you also try the church for a copy of its record and papers for his marriage. Good hunting.
