Hi List This discussion pertains to genealogy because of the name changes. 10% + of the AIF were German descent and not necessarily with German surnames, if you go to www.awm.gov.au and type your German name in the WW1 nominal roll you probably find the name you are after. My wife's friend is a Frank and when I checked the BDM's for her 1910,1913,1915 and 1917, the names were Carl Johan Franke, Johanna Franke, then with the Wartime births, Ethel Gallipolli Frank and John Anzac Frank, I kid you not. I did write to the War Memorial in regard to this question on Germanic names and did not receive a reply as I have a distant relation KIA in Crete he was a Piltz, all up 9 Piltz's served in both wars, the Australian Air Vice Marshal (RAAF) was Germanic from early settlers, the Poms would not allow our head of the air Force to serve in Europe because of his name. I hope this helps. Edward
