I have just read an article that says that when migrants left Germany for Australia the village and family would gather for a funeral service and wake. The article says that the local records were marked with a symbol that suggested the person had died. I can imagine that for those left behind it was like a death because the chance of ever seeing their loved ones again was rather remote. Has anybody ever heard of this custom or is it just a figment of someone's imagination? Albert Grulke
