As part of my ongoing search for Hoffmann's in Australia I found a book which may interest some people. Enemy Aliens- Internment and the Homefront Experience in Australia 1914-1920 by Gerhard Fisher ISBN 0 7022 21783 It had several references to members of the Walla Walla NSW German community and the governments attitude to anti-war activity by these families. It includes Paech and another family starting with W (sorry imperfect memory). Could be worth a look if anyone is interested in the period, it should be available on inter-library loan for a small fee. Regards Gillian
Gillian & list, I have been lurking for some time now and working through the archives. The book "Enemy Aliens" is a very informative publication. It is easier to find if you spell the author's name 'Fischer'. The Walla Walla members detained at that time were - Herman Alfred Paech, Daniel Edward Heppner (1st cousin twice removed to my wife), John and Ernst Wenke. Many others were rounded up all over Australia; several highly qualified and respected church and community leaders, academics and medical practitioners among them. Worst of all was the founder of the brewing company that made my favourite beer when I was younger - Edmund Resch. If you have a bent for this aspect of Australian History and read some of the official papers and military intelligence (I still regard this as an oxymoron) of the time you could compare it to some recent press releases - the enemy has changed to Fundamentalist Religion, terrorism and associated evils. The guiding light is now Uncle Sam rather than O. M. E. but the rhetoric and stupidity remains the same. Some people in high places are just incapable of learning from history. ACT members can borrow the works from the ACT Library Service, Woden Branch or read it at the National Library.
