My great great grandfather came to South Australia on the George Washinton from Bremen Germany, arriving 22nd January 1846. His name was Schmiedig, though there are a number of variations on it. I seem to have come to a dead end (so to speak) with him. He was recorded in the SA Gazette as being naturalised in 1872 (?) but Archives said alot of the earlier records have gone and there is no other record of him. I'd hoped that by obtaining his papers I might find out more about where he came from and who his family was. Does anyone have any ideas for me to pursue now? I've tried the surname search - nothing - the name was anglocised to become SMEEDY and I saw there are some of this name in America, but haven't found any at all in Australia. Any suggestions?
