    3. Hi Lyn, A very kind offer, but can I take a raincheck? A gentleman in Germany has offered and I have sent scanned images to him. However I will send an image of the beautiful pouch that the docs come in. I am starting to think that the docs are an invitation to a Baptism/Christening. (Is there a difference?) Regards Doug Price -----Original Message----- From: McDades [mailto:patlyn@netspace.net.au] Sent: Monday, 13 December 2004 3:42 PM To: AUS-GERMAN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [AUS-GERMAN] German Translation You Wrote I have tried that, with a little success, but painfull success. The writing is what I would call "extreme" gothic, and I have problems even recognizing some alphabetic letters. The certificates are in original handwriting on printed forms. I have found the word lieben, which appears to be baptizing. So that's a start. There an many words that the Altavist translator can't recognize, such as Moge (with two dots over the O), and Mege Also the people on the cards (which are my ancestors) are adults, and probably were rebaptized when one Lutheran following broke away from another Lutheran clan, as happened at Lights Pass in SA ************************ I think that Lieben means love but as German words change in some of the ways that they are used I would not correct you. Taufen is the word for baptism generally. I have a very limited knowledge of some of the more basic German and have translated my own German records back to 1500 and would be happy to have a go without guaranteeing anything, if it is the best offer you get. I also have a German friend if I get stuck. Can you scan it????? So that's a start. lieben = verb: to love, adjective: dear > There an many words that the Altavist translator can't recognize, such as > Moge (with two dots over the O), and Mege mögen = to like möge is conditional form (may he/she/it like...) Send those scans to me and I will look and see what I cant decipher from them.

    3. Hi People, I have about 8 "cards" dated around 1875, and they are generally 12 X 8 cms. The card is really a small folded pouch, which is intricately patterned and perforated on the front. When I turn this card over there are 4 folded-in flaps making the pouch. Inside the pouch there is some sort of certificate, maybe a Christening?? All writing is in German, which I can't read. My early German arrivals were Lutheran, and these documents relate to them. Is there SKS out there that I could send a scan to for interpretation? I will limit my request to just one card. Regards Doug Price

    3. HI Eva and everyone, just as a reminder, the only way to unsubscribe from the list is to send a message to aus-german-l-request@rootsweb.com or replace the l with a d if you are in digest mode. Put the word unsubscribe in the subject line. That's the only way, else requests come through to the list and don't do anything.
