    3. My great great grandfather came to South Australia on the George Washinton from Bremen Germany, arriving 22nd January 1846. His name was Schmiedig, though there are a number of variations on it. I seem to have come to a dead end (so to speak) with him. He was recorded in the SA Gazette as being naturalised in 1872 (?) but Archives said alot of the earlier records have gone and there is no other record of him. I'd hoped that by obtaining his papers I might find out more about where he came from and who his family was. Does anyone have any ideas for me to pursue now? I've tried the surname search - nothing - the name was anglocised to become SMEEDY and I saw there are some of this name in America, but haven't found any at all in Australia. Any suggestions? 3. You are right Eric and I am going to follow up the Zellerfeld branch to see what I can find. I actually think the guy on the Dockenhuden is mentioned on the LDS site too. Looking at the old maps the two towns seem to be separate but now have joined through sprawl I guess. This research business is a full time job. Of course I would be delighted to find any other subscribers who are distantly related. 3. Hello everyone, It is interesting to note that Jill's HONIGs were from Clausthal, and the other HONIGs who emigrated by the "Dockenhuden" in 1852 were recorded as being from Zellerfeld. My modern map shows the town as Clausthal-Zellerfeld so obviously the two towns were close and have grown together. There would seem to be a good chance than that the two HONIG families were related. I wonder if there are any descendants of the other ones? 3. Hello John, We have extracted departures from Hamburg 1850 - 1873 and 1877 & 1878. Since Schoenberg could also be written Schönberg, I looked for SCHOENBERG and SCHÖNBERG. I could not find a Johanna, but found a Marie SCHONBERG aboard the "Palmerston" to New Zealand in 1872. She was recorded as being from Tucheln in Brandenburg, and was 19 years old. It is possible that her name really was SCHÖNBERG and written poorly and/or read wrongly - at times the writing on some of the lists was very poor indeed. Interestingly she appears to have been travelling in a group of 4:- 189 SCHONBERG Marie Tucheln Brandenbg Frau 19 f 190 SCHONBERG Johann Ludw Tucheln Brandenbg Schäfer 66 m 191 JAHN August Tucheln Brandenbg Schäfer 55 m 192 JAHN Auguste Tucheln Brandenbg Frau 48 f We guessed that "Tucheln" might have been a wrong spelling of Tuchen. All the best for your searches! 3. Hi Albert, You can get the book through inter library loan. I am a librarian and have been able to borrow a copy of this book myself.using ILL. Where I work there is an intial charge of $4 to do a n ILL search. If the book comes from another public library there should be no further charge. Tenterfield library has a copy of this book that is not a reference copy and therefore able to be borrowed. It is not possible to buy a copy of this book. I am able to purchase books through my work place and unfortuately when the enquiry was made I found it was out of print. I did find a secondhand copy on the Amazon website but it was priced at over $100 and so to expensive. Hope this helps. 1. Germans in Hunter Valley
    2. Albert Grulke
    3. I have a problem. I have it on record that the first recorded group of German migrants to Australia came out in 1817. The information that I have says that they came from the Rhine Valley to work in the vineyards of the Hunter valley although it does seem that they may have worked in the Camden area more than the Hunter. Apparently the Macarthur's had a lot to do with this migration. My problem is that when I pursue it I find no reference to this elsewhere. I find a lot of data about migrants from Germany - The Rhine Valley - to Hunter Valley from 1949 through the 1850s. Does anybody have any data in regard this 1817 group? I found a document that says that there was large scale German migration between 1817 and 1860 into New South Wales but it too is vague. Thanks Albert Grulke

    3. No - it's a newgroup. Go to http://www.genealogienetz.de/genealogy.html change to English and select:Newsgroups this takes you to: http://www.genealogienetz.de/misc/listserv-e.html You thne have to subscribe - details of how to do this on the second page. You can subscibe in digest mode (one eamil with a list of every message posted and you look through this) or mail mode and each post comes to you as an individual email and you delete those you don't want. Or your ISP should provide access to newsgroups and you can just subscribe. If you use Outlook Express, open it up and in the Inbox click on Tools then Newsgroups. You will then get a Newsgroup Subscription page. You can search for soc.gene and that will bring up all of the soc.genealogy newsgroups and you can select the German newsgroup. You will then need to suscribe - very easy and there will be directions for doing that when you go in. Basically you send an email to a specified address with Subscribe in the subject line. This assumes you have the newsgroup server details correct via your ISP. You need to set these up the same way as you set up mail in that the ISP will ned to provide an "address" for the newsgroups. If you don't have this set up call your ISP and get them to advise how this is done. Very easy. I received a number of useful responses when I posted to the Soc.genealogy.german newsgroup. There is a FAQ at http://www.genealogienetz.de/faqs/sgg.html Cheers Anne ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jill and Bill Cummins" <cummins@hotlinks.net.au> To: <AUS-GERMAN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 12, 2005 9:47 PM Subject: Re: [AUS-GERMAN] Family History > Thanks Perplexed, will have a look at it.
