    3. Hello Carolyn, I was interested to see that Louisa Friederika Margaretha SCHRÖDER is on your tree, because she is on mine as well! She left Hamburg in 1865 for Queensland aboard the "Helene" accompanied by her mother, step-father, half-sisters and half-brother. Just to complicate matters, she is recorded on the passenger list under her step-father's surname, BROHMANN. According to the passenger list, she was 20 years old, so should have been born in 1844 or 1845. I haven't yet found her birth information but have her mother's details (and details for some of the mother's ancestors). If you are interested in further details contact me off the list. Greetings from a very humid Brisbane Eric Kopittke > From: "Carolyn Crocker" <cwcarolync@qldnet.com.au> > Date: 29 January 2005 10:09:19 PM > To: AUS-GERMAN-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [AUS-GERMAN] Schroders > > > Hi again Kerry, > > I should have said in the other email to go to "search the index" .... > then > follow the rest of the instructions below. 3. Have read recent articles re Germans to the Hunter Valley. I was interested in one reference re the assisted migrants to be married. My gg/father/mother travelled from Hesse and spent about 12 months or more in London before embarking on the "Beulah" which sailed on 6/12/1848 for Sydney. They were married in 1847 in London. I have been unable to find any record of their marriage in or around London. Would any other readers have similar cases where their forebears were married in London prior to departure for Australia. 2. Sharon Sawyer
    3. Neville, My German ancestor also came via London where he supposedly married. I haven't been able to find any trace of the marriage or her family at all. Mine was earlier - 1833 so before civil registration. I haven't even been able to find her family name which is on some documents as Daechester. Let us know if you have any luck. Sharon

    3. Yvonne, In my younger days at Yallourn in the Latrobe Valley, Victoria, I had a good friend named Alan Schroeder. Alan's folks came from the Barossa Valley and were the descendants of German immigrants in the mid 1800's. Alan was a champion full bore rifle shooter and won the Queen's prize in Australia and at Bisley in England. Have you run across him in your quest for your family members? 3. Hi Albert, I can tell you my Ancestors lived in the Petersham area. John Henkel married Magdalena Reuter in the Scots church in Sydney13/7/63. He was 39 and they had his religion as Presbyterian. On his death Cert 7 yrs later, he died of Leprosy at Petersham. On the death cert they spelt his name as Henkeul and had his religion as Congregational. It also indicated that he may have been married previously. It was unknown when he came to the Colony. He was a gardener & Cooper by trade. His wife Magdalena remarried, as on their daughters marriage cert her last name is Smyth. In Aug 1888 they had been living in Elizabeth Street Sydney. Also the daughter was married in a Catholic church, & she was my Grandmothers mother, who followed the Catholic faith. They seem to have changed their religion along the way. Hope this help with your quest on the settlement in Sydney region, & I will be looking forward to your findings. Also, John Henkel daughter even though married in Sydney, her husband came from Armidale. And she also spelt her name Henkley. 3. Hello Albert, My Ernst August SCHRADER [born Osterode am Harz] settled in Redfern area , had 6 daughters between 1870-86, four of them in Sydney , 1 in Newcastle and 1 in Wooloongong .[ only 4 have been registered.] No idea why he left Brisbane in 1866 to go to Sydney- Beausite 1866 Passenger He did a stint in Darlinghurst gaol 1873-74 for receiving stolen goods , allowed out early for good behavior. His own father was a Policeman and Prison Warder back in Osterode !! guess he knew the ropes of prison lofe. His wife Lydia had to have her 2nd child named Lydia in a Benevolent Asylum in Feb 1873 - 10 days after Ernst was 'sent down". Seems he got a sewing machine on the cheap. he became a Citizen in 1906. Interestingly , he had 2 businesses in his name at the time in the Sydney Directories- Cane / Chaircaning/ Wicker making industry. He trained as a Basketmaker in Osterode but wrote Arbeiter in his shipping record. Hope the above is of interest to you. Yvonne marshall in melbourne.

    3. Folks, I am determined to pursue my research into Germans who came to settled in New South Wales in the 19th century. I have done some work on the Camden and Hunter Valley Germans and found it most enlightening. I know that I have only toughed the edge of the iceberg and there is much more to learn and tell. I plan to go to Sydney in the next coupe of months and do some on the ground research in the Camden valley area. Sydney is the one that has me baffled. Evidence suggests that there was a deal of German settlement around the Redfern/Petersham areas but I cannot pin it down to any family or circumstance. I also have reason to believe there may have been some movement along Villawood Road area heading into Parramatta but again cannot pin anything down. I know the area is rather broad and that does not help. If anybody can give me any clues on this I would welcome it and be most appreciative. Albert Grulke in hot sunny Melbourne

    1. New England Germans
    2. Albert Grulke
    3. My research is now moving north. I am trying to develop some story in relation to Germans who came to the New England region of New South Wales in the 19th century. I have quite a bit of factual statements but no substance. What I have satisfies me that there was a large migration into Armidale and Tenterfield. I suspect there might have been some migration into Tamworth. Uralla comes up a lot so maybe they settled at Uralla rather than Armidale. Some years ago I had contact through this link with a man in Armidale who said he had a lot of information but I long since forget his name. Any information given will be most welcome and appreciated. This story of our Germans ancestors into new South Wales seems to be a story that has been neglected in favour of other states yet I am convinced it is a story every bit as big and important. Any help appreciated. Albert Grulke in hot sunny Melbourne

    3. Hi Jennifer Have you checked out your Wehl's on the Pioneer Federation Index 1889-1901, if not I have it, there are several families on it. Let me know. Stawell has a Genealogy group, it may be an idea to contact them, maybe they can help. Also the Stawell Historical Society. Both websites are on the net. Sorry haven't got them at the moment. Good luck Anita. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jennifer LEDDRA" <jenled@bigpond.com> To: <AUS-GERMAN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 25, 2005 4:49 PM Subject: Re: [AUS-GERMAN] Hunter valley Germans > Hi Anita, > No contact with names mentioned although my family of Wehl's came from > Stawell, St Arnaud, Grampians area. > I am interested if anyone knows about St Arnaud Wehls expecially a grain > store (late 1880's). 3. Hi Anita, No contact with names mentioned although my family of Wehl's came from Stawell, St Arnaud, Grampians area. I am interested if anyone knows about St Arnaud Wehls expecially a grain store (late 1880's). My grandfather went to a small private school. Anybody have any info. Thanks.
