It isn't off topic as a number of German speaking men went to WW1, the children of German immigrants went to the war too. I have Hans Stoltenberg who served in WW1 (son and grandson of German immigrants) what is unusal about him is that he served under his real name. The Germans in WW1 shot as traitors those who had German names who fought for the allies, so if uncle Herman dissappeared arround WW1 he may have gone to war, under an assumed name! Hello listmembers, I have an interest in the surnames of KLEINSCHMIDT and WILLERT. Whilst the majority of the family is complete due to the vigilance of many family members there are quite a few outstanding vacancies. I am particularly interested in the KLEINSCHMIDTS of NSW. I live at the moment in Charters Towers in far north Queensland and am quite happy to do anylookups for anyone requiring these. I also have quite a few books on early German families in the Bundaberg (Qld) area Many thanks Allison SCHULTZ

Hi all, I just wanted to post something slightly off topic but not really. I just got 2 world war 1 dossier's from the national archives of australia. I cannot believe the information involved. HEAPS. So if you have any rellies in ww1 you want info on i'd recommend doing this, costs about $15 per dossier. Cheers, Ainslee http://ainslee.fourdegrees.com/
Hi all, When trying to translate old German documents, the language that was used 100 or so years ago has now changed considerably (as has English) and the modern translation site may not ideal. When we were trying to translate our old documents, letters & diaries we asked a local lady who was teaching German in a school and between her and a very old lady who had spoken German in the home for the first 20-30 years of her life they managed to work out most of it. But the translation site on the web is a good starting point if you've got no other alternatives. Hi List Hope the New Year is starting off well for all of you. Thought I'd list the German names I'm researching. AMMERMANN - Two brothers, Frank - arrived Brisbane 1906, and Frederick - arrived Brisbane 1911. Frank married Wilhelmine Henriette THIELE in Nov 1911. They had 4 children Ethel May (who I can find no trace of except her birth, her younger brothers never knew she even existed and I can't find a death for her, any suggestions would be appreciated), Frederick Louis, Victor Harold and Wilfred. Frederick (aka Fritz) married Mary TAYLOR in April 1917. They had 2 children Frederick (my grandfather) and John. Both brothers were from East Friesland, Prussia. VON OVEN & LUDEMAN - Henry Frederick LUDEMAN married Hermine VON OVEN in Germany. Henry and Hermine arrived in Victoria Australia in 1854 with 4 children Henry Herman Alexander (married Paulina KOCH), Julius (died 1909), John George (married Helen JONES - 1878, married Emily BARLEY - 1881) and Maria (John KELLY - 1869, married Thomas GRIFFIN - 1880). Three more children were born in Victoria Charles Benjamin (married Agnes Maud TRACY - 1888, married Margaret MURPHY - 1905), Susannah Adelide Henrietta (died 1866) and Eleanor Margaret (married Charles MORGAN). LUDEMAN & KOCH - Henry Herman Alexander LUDEMAN married Paulina Mary KOCH in Oct 1871, Melbourne. Paulina was the 2nd child of Johann Gustave Wilhelm (aka William) KOCH and Charlotte Pauline RUDOLPH (parents were John RUDOLPH and Elizabeth GRUHN). Henry and Paulina had 9 children Mary Elizabeth (married Francis FEGAN - my great grandparents), William Henry (married Mary HEIMER), Charles Edward (married Sarah MURPHY), Eleanor Charlotte (married Thomas Leonard HARKER), Susannah Hermina (married Alexander Hugh OLIVER), Alexander (died 1899), John Henry (married Mary MURPHY), Henry Ernest (died 1890) and Emma Paulina (married John Howard WALLACE). Any connections? Regards Faye Queensland Australia
I had excellent results on the "alte Deutsche", a few years ago, with some of the senior members of the Deutsche Turn Verein - German Club, 416 Vulture Street, East Brisbane - 07 3391 2434. One or two of the folks there at the time had translators tickets. The could read the script which was in vogue, before Uncle Adolph changed the rules, in about 1937.
