Gooday Isobelle, I have a copy of a paper entitled "MIGRANTS FROM THE HARZ MOUNTAINS IN THE KINGDOM OF HANOVER (GERMANY) 1849 - 1855. In it there is a Carl Friedrich Ludwig JAHN listed with his family. They came to SA aboard the "Dockenhuden" 26/11/1852 - 26/2/1853. His occupation was a roadworker and he was aged 17 when he came. Could this be your man? Hope so. Just got home from holidays and found that a roll-call had been called, with lots of replies. My great-great parents came from the Harz mountains, more specifically from Clausthal, Zellerfeld and Altenau. They disembarked in Adelaide. G G Grandfather: Carl Heinrich Julius (Louis) LEUNIG (LEINIG), underground miner of Clausthal born 1825, arrived 1.1.1855 aboard the "Caesar Goddefroy". He married Luise Henriette Fernandiene HOLZIEGEL in Burra Burra (Kooringa) SA in September 1855. She was also known as Emma MEYER. She had been born illegitimately in Clausthal in 1825 to Johanne Augustine Henriette WUSTEFELD, her father being Johann Heinrich Friedrich ZIRKLER. Emma's mother later married Johann Carl Christian MEYER. Emma had first married Heinrick Friedrich Ludwig HOLZIEGEL in Altenau in 1846. They and their children, Johann Carl August Hermann HOLZIEGEL (Carl HOLZIGAL) and Auguste Georgine Wilhelmine HOLZIEGEL, and Emma's parents and step-brothers and sisters arrived in Adelaide in 1852 aboard the "George Washington". Emma and Louis and their children moved to Maryborough soon after their first child was born in 1856 and spent the rest of their lives gold-digging. I have quite a deal of information about these people, but any help (and photos) would be appreciated. Geoff Leunig 15 Hillandale Road Warragul Victoria 3820 Australia ph 61 3 5623 2959

Am looking for information on the ship "Amallfy" as my G/Grandfather spelt it, or "Amalfi," a ship I found in a shipping list. Does anyone know it, my G/Grandfather Henry Rolfs, arrived in 1881 on this ship, we think he was a member of the crew, any advice on passenger lists or how to find crew lists Hoping someone can help..Val [email protected]
Thanks to listers, have found G/Grandfathers birth place, sort of. On his application for naturalization he states his Birth Place as Bargen (Bargum),Schleswig . Can anyone help me with this town, do you know of it?, where is it?, any relevant information would be most welcome. Thank you, Val Wilson [email protected]
Hi Albert and everyone, Thanks for your post Albert, was very interesting to read. After reading it i've decided to make this list a little more general. Still i would appreciate if anyone could stick to researching their rellies of Australian/German descent, but also i'll accept general discussions on genealogy research as well. I'm fairly new to this, been doing it for 2 years this august and i'm wondering if i'm not looking in some of the right places for resources. What i collect so far are Birth Deaths and Marriage Certificates. WW1 Dossiers. Shipping lists. What other information could i search for and how to further my information? Thanks, Ainslee

Ainslie, I just thought I would respond to your comments. I have no particular interest in who begat who so really I am not into genealogy as we seem to know it. My interest is in history and in particular the Germanic migration to Australia in the 19th century. I have found this and other lists invaluable for my research. In history books we get what academics write and generally that is taken from official documents and books written by other academics. The exciting thing about these lists are that one is getting history from people as they recall it or as they have been told it by their ancestors. This makes it very personal but more important from my aspect more realistic. Perhaps the memories are not as accurate as we would like but it is how each individual remembers it and that is what I find important. I started out with intent of writing a small book which I do in my old age as a hobby, but I now have enough material to write a dozen small books. perhaps one day soon I will achieve my goal and maybe somebody might even read one of them. The reasons I came onto this list was to try and unveil the story of Germanic settlement outside of South Australia and Queensland. You would be surprised how much I have put together in a few months. Mind you the story has still not started to come out. WE of Germanic descendants have a proud historical story to be told. I reckon we should all stand up proudly to tell it because rural Australia might never have been developed as a European nation if that is what we are but for the tenacity, ingenuity and commitment of these people. So I say keep the stories coming even if they do not tell you fathered who and when. Let us talk a lot more about why, when , how and where. Just thought I would share those thoughts with you Albert Grulke -----Original Message----- From: Ainslee [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Thursday, 24 January 2002 6:14 To: [email protected] Subject: [AUS-GERMAN] Aren't i a naughty list admin? Hi Robyn, I am no expert but have had a little luck myself in requesting birth certificates. First locate the Rathaus (town hall) that supports your members birthtown. Then write to the Standesamt of that Rathaus and simply request the documentation you want. You may have to later pay for it (eg approx 9 Euro for one that I got from Leipzig, 6 Euro for one from another location). You should provide photocopies with your written request substantiating your own identification. In replying to your request, you may likely get a "modern" birth notice ie an official transcript from the Rathaus giving the essential birth details then stamped and certified. To get a photocopy of the original birth certificate may take another follow up letter or clearer instructions in your original request as to what you want. I recieved the former (a modern version) when writing but when I had the good fortune to visit Leipzig myself, I had no problems getting a photocopy of the original. The birth certificates I have got to date have been very early 1900's. I think earlier birth records may become a little problematic as church authorities were involved in these. Marriage records are also held by the Standesamt of the relevant Rathaus. Hope this helps a little.
