    1. [AUS-GERMAN] Church/civil records
    2. Ian and Chris
    3. Hi all! Further to this discussion, when searching for our ancestors, we discovered children baptised in the church records and buried in funeral parlour records, who have not been recorded in the civil records. Mostly these children died at birth or soon after sometimes buried with their mother who also didn't survive the event, but one child we found in cemetery records that doesn't appear in any legal listing was 12 years old. I understand that occasionally civil records got lost or damaged (water did terrible things to ink!) and so they do not appear in the listings that we are searching. I have also noticed that sometimes babes who died at or soon after birth, were only recorded in the deaths, their births weren't registered. Something to keep in mind when your searches come up blank. Chris C. where the cool change has created a dust storm!

    3. regarding if the couple signed 2 certificates or not......I dont believe that to be the case at all. My couple signed 1 cert/ reg. entry book at the church....BUT ....WHOEVER TRANSCRIBED THE RECORD FOR bdm NSW omitted the parents names / occupations . Not only am I crabby about that....but because it is only a copy of the entry, the all important signatures were absent too. Now I paid full price over the counter for my 1st "copy" $20...& I feel cheated by the system that BDM NSW has adopted. If I had engaged a transcription agent for this cert. then I would understand that it is a pay per item charge etc, but it is supposed to be a complete record & no omissions. I wonder how many other records are like this ? BFN Yvonne Marshall in Melbourne........more to come when we get to the bottom of it.

    2. Chenelle
    3. Hi everyone! I'm searching for information on "Grill" or "Grilk". It's confusing because I have certificates with Grill as the original name, but then it changes to Grilk. I don't know whether my ancestors were Grill's from Germany or Grilk's from the Netherlands. If what you were all saying about people changing their names were true,it's more than likely they were German Grill's and changed the "l" to a "k" to make Grilk. Would I be correct in thinking that? Or would it be possible that the spelling could have been wrong back in the early 1800's? Any suggestions? Thanks kindly, Sharron

    3. Yes it was propaganda, but especially at the beginning of the war it was quite widely believed. The recruiting sergeant at Lithgow NSW (someone Mc-) did believe it and told his recruits to change their Germanic names. So Martyn became Martin, the man I spoke about knew a family where the Martin changed his name and his brother didn't. My contact also says the in an English book (which he cannot remember the name of off the top of his head) refered to the story. So German names where changed, especially at the start of the war, usually because the recruiting people suggested it. regards, Gillian On Tuesday, January 29, 2002 9:56 AM, Topperwien, Bruce [SMTP:[email protected]] wrote: > I would be interested in the source of the information that the Germans > executed POWs with German names. 3. Hi List This discussion pertains to genealogy because of the name changes. 10% + of the AIF were German descent and not necessarily with German surnames, if you go to www.awm.gov.au and type your German name in the WW1 nominal roll you probably find the name you are after. My wife's friend is a Frank and when I checked the BDM's for her 1910,1913,1915 and 1917, the names were Carl Johan Franke, Johanna Franke, then with the Wartime births, Ethel Gallipolli Frank and John Anzac Frank, I kid you not. I did write to the War Memorial in regard to this question on Germanic names and did not receive a reply as I have a distant relation KIA in Crete he was a Piltz, all up 9 Piltz's served in both wars, the Australian Air Vice Marshal (RAAF) was Germanic from early settlers, the Poms would not allow our head of the air Force to serve in Europe because of his name. I hope this helps. 3. Yvonne, Your message raises some very good points. I'd like to make some more points. First, am I right to believe the couple frequently sign TWO "original" registers? Both Civil and Church (if married in church or by clergy, of course)? Second, for Civil records, we need to make clear if we are getting/quoting full records, or extracts only (meaning only limited details were supplied for the fee). Third, for Church marriage, I've had some success getting the signed "applications to wed" so to speak, completed by the pair before being wed, and noted some wonderful "variations" and crossings out (!!) in the written details. 3. Hi Kath The books give biographical details of all known people who lived in South Australia during the first fifty years of colonisation. It came about through the South Australian Genealogy and Heraldry Society who decided to support the Project as its contribution to South Australia's Sesquicenternay - Jubilee 150 Year. An extensive search of public and private sources was made as well as there being submitted material by individuals. Hope this answers your question. 3. Recently we found that the ORIGINAL of our GGrandparents marriage entry DID have their Parents names & occupations, and the young couples signatures too ! The copy we purchased from NSW rec's dept did not include these bits of info, left off by someone ???? As they were married in a church (1890) @ Gosford my cousin rang Univ. of Sydney History Dept , on a hunch , and they had the original registers with all the details. A lesson here is not to take things at face value or no for an answer.
