    3. The Light Horse Brigade (as known from the charge into Beersheeba) is now an Army Reserve unit in Victoria known as the 4/19 Prince of Wales Light Horse. My suggestion is to talk to the local army reserve units with regard to historians and other units in Toowoomba or Qld in general. Hope that helps a little Mike in SUNNY Albury on Hols from Melb. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Albert Grulke" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, March 30, 2002 8:59 AM Subject: [AUS-GERMAN] Light Horse Units > Can anybody out there tell me how I can establish the Light Horse units that > may have had a headquarters or a troop in or near Toowoomba in the 1930s. > I have an uncle who is alleged to have joined the Light Horse about 1938 or > 39. > What intrigues me here is that he never went top the war but was apparently > discharge at the outbreak of war. Kind regards, Sharron Grilk P.S I'm in the middle of family tree research ,and I have been told that the "Grilk's" changed their name to "Grulke" at some stage.Do you have any info that would assist me?

    1. Re: [AUS-GERMAN] Lack of Birth Registration Dec 1858 - Mar 1859
    2. Lisa Burton
    3. Edward, Thank you for your response to my posting. Unfortunately, births (as well as marriages and deaths) were only registered from 1895 onwards in the Cape Colony. Lutheran records there reveal no baptisms with reference to the "Solon". Nor do the Government Gazette indicators for Births/baptisms recorded in other churches. Nothing found "Registers of Arrivals & Departures of Ships 1817 - 1969" or the series, "Port Captain & Dock Superintendent, Table Bay Harbour 1806-1920". Also, surviving copies of the following newspapers; "The Cape Argus", "The Cape of Good Hope and Port Natal Shipping and Mercantile Gazette" and the "Cape Town Gazette and African Advertiser" for the month of March 1859 carry no reference to the "Solon", or any of her crew/passengers, at all. In addition, the Bremen Staatsarchive holds a register of persons born at sea. However, it commences from 1868 and, I believe, only refers to vessels registered to that port ie. Bremen. ("Solon" departed Bremen, but was registered to Oldenburg. The Archiv there was unable to assist at all.) Finally, the "Solon" does not appear "Log of Logs" .... any of the Volumes. So, I have tried ... must admit, though, I haven't looked at the IGI re. marine births. 3. Hi Lisa You are on the right track, if 2 other children were born between Bremen and Cape town they are more than likely to be registered there, I'm aware this was a German ship but my understanding is that ships when they made port , the skippers took their logs to the local consul and made the voyage report, this maybe either the British or German, if your lucky the British. Have you been to your state library and looked up the log of logs? if your vessal is mentioned it will have the film number reference for all documentation for that vessel. I hope this helps a little. Supposedly two babies were born during this period - surnames/sex unknown. Three other infants born after the "Solon" left Cape Town were registered at Moreton Bay when the vessel arrived there 25 May 1859: MOESER b. 02 May 1859 Q Ref. 59/0000 64A MARINE WEICKHARDT b. 22 April 1859 Q Ref. 59/0000 63A MARINE GOSSNER b. 18 April 1859 Q Ref. 59/0000 65A MARINE (All male children.) Or, conversely, if you have a surname, it may already appear on my List and I may be able to verify this for you.
