Try www.familysearch.org and go to library catalogue and in place search type Prussia a number of records appear for the military, especially useful if the ancestor had children whilst serving. I would also use a search on www.google.com with a keyword of Prussian cavalry then search within results at the page bottom type Waterloo, you will get a large number of hits even better if the unit is available, as units will often have dairies etc that have survived, maybe even the muster lists. I hope this helps a little. 3. Lisa Thanks for the info, he'd left the army by the time he married and had his family. He became a carpenter which doesn't seem the type of occupation an ex cavalry officer would have. That is one of the reasons I want to check up. Would it be best if I got my German contact to put my letter in German? TIA Kay ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lisa Burton" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, April 12, 2002 9:22 AM Subject: Re: [AUS-GERMAN] Military Records Kay I know that Military records for the Hannover Province are available in the State Archive in Hannover. 2. Lisa Burton
    3. The Memorandum between KOCH and LESLIE was located 'by accident' ... it was sent to me by a fellow researcher in Sydney who knew of my interests - she came across it while looking for other material at the National Library of Australia - a real 'fluke'. I don't believe there is a collection of solely such Contracts in the respective Archives. Just a matter of if the odd one, here and there, has survived; as a result of being included/indexed with other documents eg. from a government enquiry, private bequest, etc. You could always enquire though .... Another contact of mine has a 'Certificate of Character' for her German immigrant ancestor (KOCH per "Parland" 1849) .... similarly, only a handful of these seem to have survived. This Certificate was signed by the Magistrate of prospective emigrant's village and then by the British Consul in Frankfurt - attests to his good character, gives his occupation and dates of birth for himself and dependants!! (German on one side - English on the reverse, also.) More 'off-list', Denise. 2. Migs Eder
    3. Hi Listers this whole "Military records not available" thing must have changed, surely? For NZ&Aus records they practically fall over themselves giving you copies of the paperwork up to at least W2, and that's not the proverbial 100 years ago some people claim for closed records . . . . ANY hints on this - my soldier was in fact a sailor on a warship, and jumped ship in London in 1856 - please share. And NB Kay - I don't know when your cousin is going to Germany, but get them a phrase book and audio tapes from the library now. German is an easy language for an English speaking person to learn, structured similarly and with a lot of the same vocabulary, even easier to read a bit of than to speak - brot, bread; butter, butter; . . . . "Hier ist ein Landkart. Es ist ein landkart von Europe" ("Here is a map. It is a map of Europe." Kart as in Cartography, yes? Get her to give it a go, and just ignore the fact that tables and chairs etc are male or female, which in English we don't bother with.) Migs Eder NZ Seeking Theodore Heinrich Gotthilf Eder, b Hamburg 1836. (Kay said) My 3rd ggrandfather Christian Friedrich Wilhelm Lemm fought in the Prussian Cavalry at the Battle of Waterloo. Family stories say he was awarded the Iron Cross amongst other decorations and that he was buried with them and his sabre at Gomersal, Sth Aust. We were told he was an Officer and I would like to check the veracity of this. A few other facts that were passed down don't stand up when checked. Evidently someone from the family went to Germany and obtained the birth, marriage details from the church. He came from Potsdam, his house was with in sight of the Brandenburg Gate. We have a photograph of it. Anyway when over there they tried to check up on his military record but were given short shift by the German authorities. Can anyone suggest how I can find out about this, hopefully without costing a lot of money. A cousin is going over there later this year, she doesn't speak German though I have contacts here that would write letters for us. TIA Kay ______________________________

    3. This is the same ship/voyage my great-grandfather arrived on and I was wondering if you had read the interesting incident which occurred in Sydney when the shipped docked. Much written in the newspapers about this "slave ship". Also can be found in the Kopitzke Hamburg to Australia book. It seems some were indicating that the passengers on board had signed a document saying they agreed to work in Qld - but they were unaware of this as it was in English. Lisa how did you manage to obtain this document, as I would like to see if my gg had signed one also, altho he ended up 2 months after docking in Victoria - he well could have been one of the four who disappeared! regards Denise > Georg Wilhelm Koch a.k.a. 3. Hi all. This is my first time posting. I am researching the surname Ballhausen. My ancestors arrived from Germany in 1849, and lived in various places such as Burra (South Aust), Portland (Vic) and Ballarat (Vic). They came from Hartz, Hanover, Germany. I am also researching the surname Norton. It sounds English, but William Norton, was born in Elberfeld, Prussia (Germany), and naturalised in 1857. It's thought that he changed his name when he came here. Caroline Ballhausen married William Norton, 1850, in Burra SA. I'm interested in hearing from anybody who thinks they may be connected, researching the same line and would like to share information. I have more information than this to share. Thanks all. 3. Hello Melanie, I am interested in your message, because my folks also came from the Harz and arrived in Adelaide early in 1849, on the Godeffroy. They too worked in the mining industry, starting at Glen Osmond then moving backwards and forwards between Kalgoorlie and Broken Hill. I would be interested to know if the original Ballhausen's came from around Clausthal-Zellarfeld, which was a base metal mining area im Harz and if they travelled out on the Godeffroy. I have been trying to track down a passenger list for the Godeffroy, but have only been able to find details of the folks who disembarked in Melbourne, where she called in, before arriving at Adelaide. 3. Set yourself a time limit Give yourself a year or whatever, to finish and stick to it. Decide what you want to do with it. Is it for family only or publishing for general reading. Decide whether you want to do a bio on one member or a page on each branch/limb/twig. Decide if you are going to do it following a time frame e.g. when they left Germany until their death in other words a small story on each family, or are you going to do is as a list of family birth deaths and marriages. 3. Hi all! Other suggestions: Buy, or borrow from your local library, a book/s on the subject. Visit your local Genealogy Society and chat to the members. Check out the many programs in the computer program dept. of larger computer stores. Subscribe to/buy one or some of the Genealogy magazines available. Read other family histories or even local & school histories in your local library and see how others have gone about it. Any one got any more? Chris C. Sunraysia.
