    2. Kitson, Dianne
    3. Hi The german families I am interested in are all based in South Australia. HIMMLER, Johann Wilhelm Christian from Osterode arrived in South Australia 1882. He moved around South Australia before settling in Walloway, Pinnaroo and then Hahndorf. FICHTNER, Carl Wilhelm August arrived from Berlin/Crossen with his wife Johanna Louise Charlotte (nee Schmidt) and their daughter Anna Elise in 1881. They settled in Hahndorf. Anna married Wilhelm Himmler. With them were SCHMIDT, Johann Friedrich and his wife Johanna Julianna (nee Greulich) and their two adult children Carl Friedrich August SCHMIDT (a chemist) and Marie Sophie Anna Clementine SCHMIDT (a seamstress). Carl later returned to Germany to live. The others remained in Hahndorf. Would love to share information with anyone or find connections within Germany or other branches who went to other parts of Australia or America. Regards Dianne Kitson Sydney, Australia

    3. Hi Ross, The book may not be available still to purchase, but no harm in trying ! It was published in 1981 as it covers Freeling 1860-1980. I have the authors as Thelma Kuhlmann and Owen Bockmann and it was published by the Freeling Women's Agricultural Bureau in September 1981. I will make further enquiries for you if you like as my dear Mum is a member of that Bureau and I will get back to you. Re - Gabel no mention sorry I don't know of any books on the Barossa Valley which would mention that surname, where abouts did they live? I know there is a book written on Truro which the author is Reg Munchenberg and a very good book, I know the S.A. State Library has that book. Also Re- Gabel I have a Glatz male married a Gabel lady and they went from S.A. to Dimboola Vic and settled? I can check on what their christian names and the little I have on them if you think there may be a connection! Looking forward to hearing from you and hope there is as I have been "stuck" on them for ages! Regards to all, Judy. 2. Jones, Colin N
    3. The link below will take you to a page at the Australain National Archives which have a range of information on prisoners of war held in australia. Large numbers of Italians were POWs in Australia and as part of their internment were required to work in the community under parole (a promise to be good). A large number ended up working at fruit picking and were billetted with local families. "... were kept open in families". From my memory of a recent programme on TV in Australia ALL of the italian POWs went back to Italy but about one third ended up returning to australia. A large number ended up back in the fruit growing areas which have become very italianised. A lot of them have become very succesful farmers. http://www.naa.gov.au/The_Collection/Family_History/other_records.html#alien s Aliens, internees and prisoners of war - World War II In 1941 the Australian government accepted a large number of prisoners of war from the Middle East, with a further transfer of Italian prisoners in 1943. A total of 25 720 prisoners of war were held in Australia during World War II: 1 651 Germans, 18 432 Italians and 5 637 Japanese. Prisoners of war were housed in specially built camps and guarded by Citizen Military Force reservists. There were a number of escapes by POWs, the most serious being the Cowra breakout in August 1944. The POWs were not repatriated immediately after the war because of a shortage of shipping, but all except a small number of escapees had been sent home by January 1947. see also http://home.st.net.au/~dunn/pow/pow.htm PRISONER OF WAR AND INTERNMENT CAMPS IN AUSTRALIA DURING WW2 cheers Col -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, 16 April 2002 5:28 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [AUS-GERMAN] WW II prisoners of war I am inquiring for a friend about the locations of prisoner of war camps in Australia. 3. I am at a loss to find information on my SCHROEDER ancestors. Augustus SCHROEDER married Dorothe TANHAUSEN? Their child, or one of their children (my ancestor) was Ann(e/a) Dorothe(a) SCHROEDER. Anna or Ann was born about 1833 in Luneburg, Hanover, Germany Anna or Ann married Augustus KLEMMER (emigrated 1852, naturalized 1958) in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia in 1877 but curiously their first child, Emilie Dorothea Henrietta KLEMMER, was born in 1861 (not registered in Melbourne). Their second child, Edwin Henry Augustus KLEMMER was born in 1868 (registered in Melbourne). Cannot find ANY information on Anna's: birth date/place immigration/emigration parent's wedding date/place (Augustus SCHROEDER/ Dorothe TANHAUSEN?) parent's birth date/place If anyone can offer some suggestions it would be much appreciated.
