Hi List, My german interests are: Martin Mudra, his wife Anna and their son Matthes who arrived in Adelaide from Prussia in 1858 and moved to victoria 2 years later. and Louis Becker who arrived from Frankfurt Germany in 1857 in Victoria. Louis left his parents and a brother behind in Germany. Also does anybody know anything about ordering inquest information. I have the reference numbers but I am not sure where to order them from. 3. > Louis Becker who arrived from Frankfurt Germany in 1857 in Victoria. WHICH Frankfurt ? With TWO cities in Germany named Frankfurt, "Frankfurt, Germany" simply does not do. Even the Germans in Germany tack on the name of the river, on which each is located, to discern one from the other: Frankfurt am Main (Frankfurt on Main) in Hessen, and Frankfurt an der Oder (Frankfurt on Oder) in Brandenburg In common usage, they are shortened to Frankfurt/M and Frankfurt/O

    3. Hi all, my main interest is the above surname variations in Victoria & NSW mainly, but some may be in Sth Aust. My Ernst Schrader came to Moreton Bay 1866 on Beausite , married in Sydney 1870 to Lydia Douglas & had 6 daughters between 1870 & 1884. Can only find birth entries for 4 dtrs ! Middle 2 girls , Florence A Schrader b circa 1875 ,not found Ellen / Helen Schrader b circa 1878 , not found...would appreciate some help with these 2. Ernst was in GAOL feb 1873 when his 2nd daughter was born in Sydney at the Benevolent Asylum !!! Any helpful tips on how to locate "naughty ancestors" prison records ? I think he was already married or a father back in Osterode or Dudestradt ,Germany, where he was a Basketmaker. This baby Lydia Schrader b1873 , had a dtr Lillian Rich, who was in films with Reginald Denny in Australia & America..any hints on how to find more about her ? This is an elusive family but Ernst is supposed to have had 7 brothers , I want to believe that some of them came to Australia too. Yvonne in Melbourne Y & P Marshall

    3. Hello, I am researching the family of Charles Frederick Korner and Sarah Elizabeth Prangley. They were married in Roma, QLD in 1871. They had five children - Mary Elizabeth, Edward Charles, Adeline Sophia, Ernest Victor (died an infant) and Charles Frederick (junior) - born in Roma and Cardwell. Charles Frederick (senior) died in Cardwell in 1881. He emigrated from Stuttgardt in 1864 as Carl Friedrich Korner. Sarah came from England (London/Surrey?). I would love to hear from anyone with a connection somewhere. I would also appreciate it if someone could help me with information about how to trace a naturalisation record, if there would have been one at this time. Was a name change a legal process? Thanks, Sandy

    1. [AUS-GERMAN] Writing Family History
    2. Ian and Chris
    3. Hi Ainslee! Hope it all comes together OK for you in the end. Check out the available help & info at the Rootsweb site at http://www.rootsweb.com/ Also go to your local library who most probably have a book on the subject, but also look at how other family histories or just other books eg. local history, school history have been put together. Visit your local newsagent and check out what Family History magazines are available - there may be one on writing up your history, or just see how others have put short articles together that are about their family. Bookshops may have books on the subject, also some Genealogical Societies run workshops on various subjects, find out if there's one happening soon that will help. Anyone from a local society would put you on the right track. You will find lists in some of the Australian Family History Magazines or on their web sites. Hope this is helpful. 1. [AUS-GERMAN] Re: AUS-GERMAN-D Digest V02 #142
    2. Dear Ainslee, I wonder if you are trying to write a narrative of the life of your ancestor or if you are trying to put the family genealogy (descendancy) in the book? I have compiled two books for my family and they were essentially descendancy oriented. I did this because I have no contact with the people who knew my ancestors - they died long before I was aware that I had ancestors..........so a collection of the genealogy of the descendants was prepared for them. There are two kinds of these books that could have been done. One way is to just mention the names of the descendants - no dates, no places and the other way is to include the names, dates of birth, marriage and death as well as place of the events. In the first example, someone coming along after you would have no idea if they had the right family or the right time period or the right location. Especially so if the surname is a common name and a number of families of that name were known to reside in the area. I am related to the SCHULTZ and TROST names and there are a number of families of that name in the area where I was born but all of them descend from different pioneer families.....so it is important to me to find the correct family to do my research. Without any identifying information other than a name, it would be extremely difficult to be assured one had the correct family. In the second example, there is no doubt as to which family you refer. Full names, dates and places of events are of more use to those who come after us to be able to identify the correct family and then continue the research. However, there are some people who do not want their births, marriages and places of those events published in a book. To my way of thinking this is a silly attitude. The government knows when and where one was born or married. The postman knows where they currently live as does the phone company, the plumber, the school district, the city council worker to send rate notices and the election committee for the electoral rolls and the list goes on............. In today's society Privacy is not an option. If you wish to just write a narrative, that is a story of the family and its doings, then it might require loads of enquiry and much research into the history of the area from which they came and the area's in which they live. That seems like an overwhelming task since there might be a real scarcity of information or there might be more stuff than you can poke a stick at. Either you will have a book of two or three pages or a book of over 1,000 pages depending on the amount of information available. A poll of your relatives might be unproductive because you will probably end up with as many opinions as you have relatives. Go with your instincts - you are the writer and it is your family. hope this helps, Beverly. [email protected]

    1. [AUS-GERMAN] Re: WOLTERSDORF
    2. Hello Niki, I have some people from Woltersdorf but it is the Woltersdorf close to the German/Polish Border. On my map there are 4 towns called Woltersdorf. My suggestion to you is to try to find out which Kreis the town belonged that y our ancestors came from. Mine were in Kreis RANDOW which now longer exists and I am told that this has become Kreis ANGERMUNDE. My ancestors came from Hohenselchow, Pinnow, Casekow, Woltersdorf - all towns that were close to each other and for 50 yrs of last century, were under Communist rule and as a result many of the church records of my ancestors have been lost. So the best suggestion I can come up with for you is to try to determine from whatever sources may be available to you, which Kreis they came from and then you can successfully pin down which Woltersdorf is the ancestral town. cheers, Beverly.

    3. This has also been posted to the Brisbane list so apologies to those who have got it twice. Does anyone else have ancestors who went to Brisbane from Woltersdorf in Pommern. It seems that mine did but I'm having a lot of difficulty in identifying just which Woltersdorf as there are several. Can anyone advise me on how to pin down which one it might be? I've tried searching the web but unfortunately haven't found any clues. My great grandparents, Wilhelm Carl WAHRY and Auguste Louisa Charlotte MEIER went to Nundah in 1888 with their 6 or 7 children and apparently came from Woltersdorf. 3. Hi I've just been on holiday in Brisbane (and loved the warm temperatures!!). I did a search through Nundah Historical Cemetery for my great grandparents and others (Wahry/Vahry, Stegmann, Knoll, Jakobsen) and did notice a few Schmalz graves there. The Nundah Historical Society is very helpful and has a list of graves (although I discovered it's not complete as I found other graves which hadn't actualy been listed) so if you don't live in Brisbane and can't easily get to the cemetery you could try contacting them on 3260 6703 or you could phone the sexton (who's actually based at a bigger cemetery but is responsible for the Nundah one) on 3403 5935. From memory, when you walk in the main entrance of the cemetery if you take the path to the right of the little rotunda/shed thing there are a cluster of Schmalz graves up there somewhere on the left. Good luck!
