    3. Hi all, I was chastised last night by a former Librarian about the information I gave regarding access to "Enemy Aliens". What I should have been telling you was that: "You check with your local Library first, most have a very comprehensive collection of Genealogy and Australian History works. THEN you race off to your State Library." Brian Rhynehart, Canberra. HAGSOC #3273 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Researching: German Families relevant to this list: WILL, HEPPNER/HEPNER/HOEPPNER, HOHNBURG/HOHENBERG. plus some of the families in their marriages for historical interest.

So, I am glad to be here! I am researching Johonnes Schroeder who was living somewhere in Germany in 1805 when he had his daughter, Margaret. He must have moved to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA by 1824 because his daughter married there that year. Margaret and her husband, Jacob Myers, were married in Pennsyvania, but died in Ashmore Township in Illinois. I don't know the name of Johonnes' wife. I am also trying to find information about Jacob Myers (Margaret's husband) who was born somewhere in Germany 16 August, 1794. Is anyone else researching Myers and Schroeder (Schrõder/Schrader/Schroder)? Sandi sandilee@cableone.net

    3. Gillian & list, I have been lurking for some time now and working through the archives. The book "Enemy Aliens" is a very informative publication. It is easier to find if you spell the author's name 'Fischer'. The Walla Walla members detained at that time were - Herman Alfred Paech, Daniel Edward Heppner (1st cousin twice removed to my wife), John and Ernst Wenke. Many others were rounded up all over Australia; several highly qualified and respected church and community leaders, academics and medical practitioners among them. Worst of all was the founder of the brewing company that made my favourite beer when I was younger - Edmund Resch. If you have a bent for this aspect of Australian History and read some of the official papers and military intelligence (I still regard this as an oxymoron) of the time you could compare it to some recent press releases - the enemy has changed to Fundamentalist Religion, terrorism and associated evils. The guiding light is now Uncle Sam rather than O. M. E. but the rhetoric and stupidity remains the same. Some people in high places are just incapable of learning from history. ACT members can borrow the works from the ACT Library Service, Woden Branch or read it at the National Library. 3. As part of my ongoing search for Hoffmann's in Australia I found a book which may interest some people. Enemy Aliens- Internment and the Homefront Experience in Australia 1914-1920 by Gerhard Fisher ISBN 0 7022 21783 It had several references to members of the Walla Walla NSW German community and the governments attitude to anti-war activity by these families. It includes Paech and another family starting with W (sorry imperfect memory). Could be worth a look if anyone is interested in the period, it should be available on inter-library loan for a small fee. Regards Gillian

    3. I started to do that, by printing out family group sheets and storing them in a folder, but then things changed so much that the hard copies were out dated. If my family could just put things on hold and not procreate my family tree would be so much easier!. I like the to do functions in Legacy etc, I'm just lazy cos I want it to tell me what I need to do. I used to have a program that used to show me which dates were missing for which people, but I can't remember what program that was. It was useful however. -----Original Message----- From: McDades [mailto:patlyn@netspace.net.au] Sent: Friday, 27 August 2004 9:00 PM To: AUS-GERMAN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [AUS-GERMAN] researching names Hi, I also use my computer to research but have backed it up over the years with hard copy and folders. Takes up space and would be a bit of a cost if you do it all at once. I have been doing it this way for around 30 years. Some family history programs come with their own to do lists. Like John I also use Legacy 5.0, which has one. I do go back to my hard copy and have found occasional mistakes in the computer copy by doing so. My husband has over 5,000 names and also uses both systems. Lyn from Qld Researching: WEICKHARDT, SCHARFFENORTH, GRUNNINGER, ENGELHARDT, SAUERBIER

    3. Hi John, yep I use this too. I used Generations for years, but it got too buggy, the bigger my tree got. I downloaded The Master Genealogist last night, but it doesn't seem to have the book section it used to. Or I'm doing something wrong. I've found Legacy great, only thing I don't like is, or I haven't found how to do, is if someone has had multiple spouses, it doesn't flag this and I have to load up the spouse list. _______________________________________________ List Administrator of Aus-german-l & hooper-ons-l & deller-l www.ainsleehooper.com GOONS #3895 Hooper, worldwide. -----Original Message----- From: John Warnock [mailto:twojays@tik.com.au] Sent: Friday, 27 August 2004 3:55 PM To: AUS-GERMAN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [AUS-GERMAN] research techniques Ainslee--I use Legacy 5.0 deluxe. although I haven't actually used the Family group section , there is the facility to do this plus a heap of other excellent sections-- John from West Aus
