Hello there, My ancestor, John HAYNES, married Mary Ann SLOMAN in Melbourne in 1849. The couple had five children in different Victorian mining townships, the last being my great grandmother, Maria, who was born at Deep Creek (Maryborough District) in 1858. Her mother died soon afterwards and John brought his surviving children to the Cootamundra/Forbes areas of NSW. I have received some guidance but as yet have not been able to verify any details regarding his background. On Maria's birth certificate John gives his birthplace as London. The marriage certificate gives no clues, except that he signed with an "X" and must have pronounced his surname "Aynes" as that is how it was recorded. The death certificate I have could be his but none of his details were known by his friends at the time of death in Bombala....a long way from Cootamundra! Any help or advice would be most welcome. Hi Jan They may not be convicts. Does the Death Certificate give the names of his children? The reason for asking is that you appear to be unsure if you have found the correct one. Thanks for your reply, Lesley. No, the death certificate for John HAYNES in Bombala gives no family details. We do know that John was present at the marriage of his daughter, Maria, to Edwin MANWARING near Cootamundra in 1876. We have traced Mary Ann Sloman back to Dorset and Somerset and know that she wasn't a convict. I've looked at several convicts named John HAYNES arriving in Tasmania but have been unable to verify that any of them are the John we seek. Where can I search for other arrivals in Victoria pre 1849?Any suggestions would be thankfully received. Hi Jan, I have come into this thread rather late so forgive me if I am going over old ground. Have you thought of HAYNES being spelt as HAINES?. I am currently going back over a HAINES line and have found the spelling being crossed over. There are several John HAYNES on the NSW State Records on line indexes for the 1840s and 1850s. Maybe a check of both spellings might nail it for you? .He may not have come into a Victorian Port but a Sydney one.I gather from previous research on the discovery of gold that towns and cities like Sydney emptied quickly as workers went for the gold so he mayhave landed in Sydney and gone very quickly to Victoria.? Just to confuse you more... there is a Deep Creek down around Crookwell too.My HAINES moved around between Menangle and then down to Boorowa near Young. There is a photo of him taken by a Cootamundra photographer He died at Nowra so there must be a reason HAINES/HAYNES left the south east region to go to the south coast! regards Rob Central Coast
Dear Rob, It sounds like you're a descendant of a Haynes/Haines family who lived in the Coota/Harden/Boorowa/Forbes area. My great grandmother and her husband, Edwin, lived for some years on the bank of Cunningham's Creek, just outside Murrumburrah. Their children born after 1895 were born while they lived there. I'm thinking that maybe her father owned that land and the family moved there after his death. They subsequently moved back to "Rosehill", Cootamundra where they remained 'til they died. One of Maria's brothers was Frank Haines who was a station overseer near Forbes. I think it was McHenry's Creek, if that was a property name! I would love to see the photograph you have if it's not too much trouble. There may be a resemblance! When we attended Cootamundra school in the early 50's there were twins named Hains who were daughters of a local solicitor. When I recall how much they resembled some of my cousins, Maria Haynes's descendants, it makes me sure there was a connection. Working through all those certificates is beyond my budget limit infortunately. Maybe I can narrow it down further by searching for marriages between the parents named and eliminating some of them in that way. Thanks so much for your advice, Rob Jan ----- Original Message ----- From: "The Fords" <rsforf@tpg.com.au> To: <aus-convicts@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, September 06, 2008 7:37 AM Subject: Re: [AUS-CON] John HAYNES > Hi Jan, > I have come into this thread rather late so forgive me if I am > going over old ground.
