Hi Sue and Listers, I have had another thought, about the missing Margaret DAY ... might she have been given a Catholic burial, and the record not have found its way to the NSW BDMs? A check of my trusty Vine-Hall shows that the first RC church in NSW was St Patrick's, Parramatta, established in 1824. Margaret and Marcellas were married in 1825 at St Luke's, Liverpool ... but, the description of Marcellas says he was RC, so perhaps he had his wife buried as a Catholic? According to Vine-Hall, these records are held by the SAG. I'm wondering is that's where Marcellas's christening record is, too, as it doesn't appear in the NSW BDMs, despite his being born in the colony c1802 :-) Cheers, Lesley (In now *cold* - again - Melbourne) > His Description is as follows > > Aged: 23 Years > Height 5 foot 9 Inches > Skin: Sallow Complexion > Hair: Light Brown > Eyes: Grey > *Religion: RC >
Hi Lesley and Listers Does SAG really hold records that are no where else. I thought the State Library also held them. I have been looking for a baptism record for a long time, and it is not in the State Library, so maybe it is hidden away at SAG. The cost of having someone search for it at $40.00 an hour somewhat put me off, but I guess I will have to do it. Hi Annette, Well, last night I fished out another Vine Hall book, _Parish Registers in Australia_ (2nd Ed), 1990. It is of course out of date - but, it *does* include a contact address for Parramatta St Patrick's Cathedral (RC), with the comment that in 1990, at least some parish registers of this NSW church were held by Dean Brian Larkey. It also says (p10): "Although early New South Wales parish registers were called in by Government authorities to the central registry for copying: in the period from about 1900-1930, some churches did not surrender their records for this purpose. This was particularly the case with the Roman Catholic Church" Not my usual stamping ground ... but I *would* like to find the burial of Margaret DAY :-) Cheers, Lesley (In cloudy Melbourne) > Does SAG really hold records that are no where else. Thanks Lesley My story has been that I was told by someone that they had obtained a baptismal record for an 1833 St Marys Cathedral record but she could no longer find it. After a lot messing around the Qld Genealogical Society told me that SAG in Sydney had those records, I enquired and was hit by the $40.00 an hour which at that stage I could not afford. I also got the Qld State Library to check their records and they came up with nothing, though I believed they had the same records as NSW State Library. Recently I emailed the Catholic Church Archives, even knowing I was out of line. They advised me those records that did not make BDM were available at SAG, NSW State Library and National Library. I have contacted the NSW State Library and will see what happens. I know that record is somewhere as I believe the person who told me about it. If that fails, then I guess I fork out for SAGS, then every possible avenue has been investigated. So I guess its worth your trying too, Thanks Annette > > Well, last night I fished out another Vine Hall book, _Parish Registers > in Australia_ (2nd Ed), 1990. > > It is of course out of date - but, it *does* include a contact address > for Parramatta St Patrick's Cathedral (RC), with the comment that in > 1990, at least some parish registers of this NSW church were held by > Dean Brian Larkey. > > It also says (p10): > > "Although early New South Wales parish registers were called in by > Government authorities to the central registry for copying: in the > period from about 1900-1930, some churches did not surrender their > records for this purpose.
