Hi Norman There were two by that name to arrive as convicts to Tasmania. Go to the name indexes at: http://www.archives.tas.gov.au/nameindexes regards Lesley Uebel mailto:ckennedy@bigpond.net.au CLAIM A CONVICT http://users.bigpond.net.au/convicts/index.html -----Original Message----- From: aus-convicts-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-convicts-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of Norman Archibald Sent: Friday, December 12, 2008 2:30 PM To: aus-convicts@rootsweb.com Subject: [AUS-CON] John SILLCOCK Dear listers, I have been told that a John SILLCOCK ( SILCOCK ) who I am currently researching arrived in Australia some time around 1840. John married a Bridget O`SHAUGHNESSY in Melbourne in 1841. I was of the understanding that there were no convicts into Victoria during the transportation years. Could someone on the list advise whether that is true or not and if so, where might I look for the arrival of John SILLCOCK, possible convict. Norman A.
Thanks Lesley, I checked the Tassie Archives and missed the two you mention. I made the mistake of spelling the name, SILLCOCK, not SILCOCK, hence I missed the two John`s listed. The Australian descendant`s spell their name SILLCOCK. One of the descendants spent the 2nd.World War in England in Lancaster bombers. He was telling me the other day that all the SILLCOCK`s he met in England spelt their name with one "S", so there`s a good chance that one of the John`s in Tassie was the original Aussie SILLCOCK i`m looking for.
