Greg The Indent states: Age is 20 - if you use a magnifying glass you will see the very feint upswing to the 2nd number. His native place does state Shropshire His occupation was Farmersman - written as Farmersm His crime was Housebreaking - usually shortened to Ho breakg The Indent also states that he had many warts on right hand and a raised mole under left ear. John Lawson was born in the colony in about 1803 - son of William and Sarah. William and Sarah had a number of children apart from Nelson and William who are noted in Lawson's bio at http://www.adb.online.anu.edu.au/biogs/A020081b.htm regards Lesley Uebel mailto:ckennedy@bigpond.net.au CLAIM A CONVICT http://users.bigpond.net.au/convicts/index.html -----Original Message----- From: aus-convicts-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-convicts-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of Greg Bugden Sent: Saturday, August 16, 2008 10:10 AM To: aus-convicts@rootsweb.com Subject: [AUS-CON] John Bates Listers I have two research challenges regarding the convict, JOHN BATES who arrived on the Marquis of Hastings in July 1827. 1) I have seen the fishe of the Bound Indents for his arrival (fishe 665) but it is extremely difficult to read. His age could be either 26 or 21, his native place might be Shropshire, his trade might be farmman and his crime, possibly housebreaking. However, the writing is almost illegible. Could anyone with access to this fishe critique my transcription? Also 2) The Indent also says he was "disposed of " to John Lawson Esq. This is corroborated by the 1828 Census which says Bates was a servant of "Mr. Lawson" of Bathurst who was aged 25 and "born in the colony". Additionally, The 1837 General Return of Convicts says his master was "W. Lawson." Both sources place BATES and these Lawsons in Bathurst. I wonder if this is the explorer William Lawson, who had extensive landholdings at Bathurst and perhaps John is a son. However, I can't find if any of Lawson's sons was actually called John. What should I do next to explore this Bathurst assignment? Cheers Greg
Brilliant Thanks Leslie, with John Lawson aged 25 in the census of 1828; then the date of birth you have supplied makes a very suggestive of a connection. It seems pretty compelling that these were the famous Lawsons. It gives me just the necessary encouragement to pursue the link. Grateful to you once again Greg ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lesley Uebel" <ckennedy@bigpond.net.au> To: <aus-convicts@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, August 16, 2008 10:59 AM Subject: Re: [AUS-CON] John Bates > > > Greg > > The Indent states: > > Age is 20 - if you use a magnifying glass you will see the very feint > upswing to > the 2nd number. > > His native place does state Shropshire > > His occupation was Farmersman - written as Farmersm > > His crime was Housebreaking - usually shortened to Ho breakg > > The Indent also states that he had many warts on right hand and a raised > mole > under left ear. > > John Lawson was born in the colony in about 1803 - son of William and > Sarah. > William and Sarah had a number of children apart from Nelson and William > who are > noted in Lawson's bio at > http://www.adb.online.anu.edu.au/biogs/A020081b.htm > > regards > > Lesley Uebel > mailto:ckennedy@bigpond.net.au > CLAIM A CONVICT > http://users.bigpond.net.au/convicts/index.html > > > > > -----Original Message----- > From: aus-convicts-bounces@rootsweb.com > [mailto:aus-convicts-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of Greg Bugden > Sent: Saturday, August 16, 2008 10:10 AM > To: aus-convicts@rootsweb.com > Subject: [AUS-CON] John Bates > > > Listers I have two research challenges regarding the convict, JOHN BATES > who > arrived on the Marquis of Hastings in July 1827. > > 1) I have seen the fishe of the Bound Indents for his arrival (fishe 665) > but it > is extremely difficult to read.
