Was she Scottish? My 2xGt Grandmother, Janet Goldie, had an older sister Ann born in Paisley, Renfrewshire in 1793. I have no other details for Ann, other than that her parents were John Goldie and Margaret McKell. 3. Kerri I found Ann Goldie on the Australia Convict Index on Ancestry.co The Record gives her age as 46 which would mean she was born c1781/2. This would mean she was about 10 years younger than 'my' Ann. I found an Ann Goldie born 20/12/1783 (baptised 20/1/1784) in the Barony district of Glasgow (on the Scotlands People Website). She was the daughter of John Goldie and Ann Muir of Camlachie, Glasgow. This could be your Ann. Unfortunately I couldn't find a marriage record for John Goldie and Ann Muir on the Scotlands People indices. The Convict Index record mentions that Ann was convicted with her husband Barnett (sic) Hughes. I searched for a marriage record for Ann and Bernard (and B*) but could only find one marriage record for a Bernard Hughes in the whole of Scotland between 1810 and 1825. This was between a Bernard Hughes and Mary McMachen in the Barony district of Glasgow in 1824 (not all births and marriages were recorded before statutory registration was introduced in 1855). The names of her children should help as in those days the Scots tended to adhere to a strict naming pattern for their children eg eldest son after paternal grandfather, eldest daughter after maternal grandmother. Best wishes Rhoda from a still wet but increasingly bright London. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kerri Ferguson " <kerri.ferguson@bigpond.com> To: <aus-convicts@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, August 24, 2008 12:52 AM Subject: Re: [AUS-CON] "Louisa" lasses: Ann Goldie > By the way, if we have a match and it is the right lass, I have heaps of > information on Ann and her descendants. > > I daren't get too excited yet! > > kerri > > > > -----Original Message----- > From: aus-convicts-bounces@rootsweb.com > [mailto:aus-convicts-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of CandROverson > Sent: Sunday, 24 August 2008 9:21 AM > To: aus-convicts@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [AUS-CON] "Louisa" lasses: Ann Goldie > > Hello Kerri > > I am interested in your mention of Ann Goldie. 3. Rhoda, I agree with that information which I have already have but Ann's age differs markedly on many different records and therefore I have kept my options open concerning her. One of the reasons I am allowing a bit of latitude is because Bernard (also Barnard and Barnet) was a fair bit older than she and was an Irish Catholic. I have been unable to find out a great deal about him before he got into trouble with Ann in Glasgow but he is listed as being a "weaver" and a "Bernard Hughes" of Armagh (he claims to have come from there on all his documents) appears on the Irish Flax Growers List of the time. The fact that Annie appears to use BOTH surnames as the feeling takes her MIGHT be an indication that the couple was not legally married. I am open to the fact that Bernard might have had a wife back in Ireland whom he had not divorced (taking into consideration the times and the religion). Thank you for information about the naming of the children. Ann's eldest child was a girl named "Mary" or sometimes listed as "Mary Ann". So I will keep that in the back of my mind as I move forward. There are some fairly interesting records of the couple and their life in Australia but then they seem to drop out of sight. Please let me know if you learn anything extra that might help[ while you research and I will do the same. This has been a very cold winter here in parts of NSW so I think London might be such a bad place to be.
