Hi Lyn There was a William Cook on the Mangles (8) in 1837 to Port Jackson, but he was tried in Somerset in 1836. Your William Cook was transported in 1838 on the "Earl Grey" Cook, William 1838 Earl Grey (2) CCC 1836 Life 29 Stealing harness Source: The Port Jackson Convicts Anthology. The Indent for the "Earl Grey" will confirm he was tried 19 September 1836 and also provide further information. William Catling was transported on the Mangles (8) Catling, William 1837 Mangles (8) CCC 1836 14 19 Stealing harness regards Lesley Uebel mailto:ckennedy@bigpond.net.au CLAIM A CONVICT http://users.bigpond.net.au/convicts/index.html -----Original Message----- From: aus-convicts-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-convicts-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of Wilkinson Family Sent: Wednesday, October 22, 2008 10:25 PM To: aus-convicts@rootsweb.com Subject: [AUS-CON] William Cook transported to Sydney 1837 aboard the Mangles Hi, I am tearing my hair out trying to find any information on William Cook who arrived aboard the Mangles in 1837 and would appreciate advice on where to look. I know William was convicted at the Central Criminal Court on 19 Sep 1836 (compliments of the Old Bailey website) and he and his partner in crime, William Catling, were both transported on the Mangles but there the trail stops. I have found a brief reference on the Felon or Settler index at http://www.jenwilletts.com/index.htm for William Catling but nothing for young Mr Cook. He just seems to have disappeared. William Cook was born in Tottenham, Middlesex in 1814. In 1832 his mother Mary, father Thomas and a younger brother John were all covicted of different crimes within a very short period of time and were all transporeted to Tasmania. I have found their records. Mary, his mother brought her 4 youngest children with her, one of which was my g g grandmother, so she is accounted for, but the other 3 disappeared (with William) into oblivion. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. :) Lyn
Thank you Lesley :) I had just assumed they would have been transported together! I'm off to see what I can find. I love this list!!!! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lesley Uebel" <ckennedy@bigpond.net.au> To: <aus-convicts@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, October 22, 2008 11:55 PM Subject: Re: [AUS-CON] William Cook transported to Sydney 1837 aboard theMangles > > Hi Lyn > > There was a William Cook on the Mangles (8) in 1837 to Port Jackson, but > he was > tried in Somerset in 1836. > > Your William Cook was transported in 1838 on the "Earl Grey" > > Cook, William 1838 Earl Grey (2) CCC 1836 Life 29 Stealing > harness > > Source: The Port Jackson Convicts Anthology. > > The Indent for the "Earl Grey" will confirm he was tried 19 September 1836 > and > also provide further information. > > > William Catling was transported on the Mangles (8) > > > Catling, William 1837 Mangles (8) CCC 1836 14 19 Stealing harness > > regards > > Lesley Uebel > mailto:ckennedy@bigpond.net.au > CLAIM A CONVICT > http://users.bigpond.net.au/convicts/index.html > > > > > -----Original Message----- > From: aus-convicts-bounces@rootsweb.com > [mailto:aus-convicts-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of Wilkinson Family > Sent: Wednesday, October 22, 2008 10:25 PM > To: aus-convicts@rootsweb.com > Subject: [AUS-CON] William Cook transported to Sydney 1837 aboard the > Mangles > > > Hi, > > I am tearing my hair out trying to find any information on William Cook > who > arrived aboard the Mangles in 1837 and would appreciate advice on where to > look. > > I know William was convicted at the Central Criminal Court on 19 Sep 1836 > (compliments of the Old Bailey website) and he and his partner in crime, > William Catling, were both transported on the Mangles but there the trail > stops.
