Hi list, I have never had course to go down this road but I wonder if some of you with greater knowledge regarding convicts can help to either prove or disprove the following. Sarah GLEAVE, and the surname is all I have to go on, hoping it is unusual enough to find, stated that she is 34 and a widow as told to the officers of the Board Of Guardians for Bakewell Union. She is to be found listed under Taddington,Derbyshire parish but was actually living in Ecclesall Bierlow, nr. Sheffield,Yks. She claimed to have two children by her late husband. Further enquiry by the Relieving Officer uncovers the fact, supposedly, that her husband had been transported for seven years but his time will soon be up. Her children, either the two above, or another two are mentioned thus " has had two bastard children since her husband was sent off". The date is Feb 1839, the earlier information came from 1838. So I imagine transportation would be around 1832. Is it possible to to find Mr GLEAVE and confirm this woman's story. I am also assuming he was sent to Australia and nowhere else. mike -- http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~spire/Yesterday/index.htm
Hi Mike there are a couple of GLEAVE's on the Tasmanian Website.... no sign of any in New South Wales.. of the few records that are online....(which is always a good place to start looking) though there are some very good sources in amongst this List.. so I am sure that you will find someone will find who you are looking for... have you thought of trying for a marriage?? to see what his name might have been?? http://portal.archives.tas.gov.au/menu.aspx?search=11 Hope one of these is your Chap...
