Hi Michelle Mary "O'Donnell was tried in Clare in 1836 and arrived in 1837 on the "Sir Charles Forbes" in 1837 Source: The Port Jackson Anthology CD The Indents are available at many large libraries regards Lesley Uebel mailto:ckennedy@bigpond.net.au CLAIM A CONVICT http://users.bigpond.net.au/convicts/index.html -----Original Message----- From: aus-convicts-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-convicts-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of Michelle Watson Sent: Thursday, March 26, 2009 4:50 PM To: AUS-CONVICTS@rootsweb.com Subject: [AUS-CON] Thomas WOOTTON and Mary O'DONNELL/O'CONNELL - Taree/PortMacquarie Hi Everyone, This is my first post, so please forgive me if I'm breaking any rules. I've hit a bit of a brick wall with my research into Thomas WOOTTON and his wife Mary O'DONNELL. I've been able to find most of the information I need about Thomas (except what he was convicted of at the Stafford Quarter Sessions on 15 Oct 1823). Information for a published source ie Manning Wallamba Family History Society Inc, Pre 1860 Pioneer Register, 2004 states that Mary O'DONNELL was transported on the Sir Charles Forbes from Ireland on the 11th of August, 1837 arriving in NSW on the 25th December 1837. However, I've been unable to find her in any of the records I have on hand. To further complicate things, I have two records from Registers of Convicts' Applications to Marry, 1825-1851 1. Thomas WOOTTON (age 40) sentanced 7 years, transported on the Countess of Harcourt 1824 to Mary O'DONNELL (age 21) sentanced 7 years, transported on the Sir Charles Forbes 1837 Permission to Marry - 24 Dec 1839 - Port Macquarie 2. Thomas WOOTTON (age 40) sentanced 7 years, transported on the Countess of Harcourt 1824 to Mary O'CONNELL (21) sentanced 7 years, transported on the Sir Charles Forbes 1837 Permission to Marry - 21 Jan 1840 - Port Macquarie Now, I know these are somewhat common names, but it seems unlikely for two such similar pairings to occur. I think they are the same couple, but why would they get permission twice? And why the differences in names for Mary? I've been trying to track down Mary and have checked under both names but haven't been able to find any records for her. Is there anywhere online that I can check who was on a specific ship for a specific trip? I need online as I don't have access to any of the CD's that this sort of thing is usually on. These are my only convict ancestors, so it's all new territory to me, so any suggestions are welcome. Cheers, Michelle
Lesley, Thank you very much for that, much appreciated. Any ideas as to why they may have sought permission twice to marry?
