I'm English born and bred, but I have a transported convict ancestor. I recently discovered that my Gt-gt-gt-grandfather Daniel Nutter, baptised in 1794 in Colne, Lancashire, was found guilty of sheep-stealing at Lancaster Assizes on 29 August 1827 and sentenced to death. It appears that the sentence was commuted to transportation for life: a Daniel Nutter from Lancashire arrived at Sydney in July 1828 on board the Phoenix, with a life sentence from Lancaster Assizes. There is a record from a contemporary Sydney newspaper that sometime in 1828 a Daniel Nutter, who had arrived on Phoenix, had absconded, aged 34 - exactly right. He must have been caught, because he survived to get his ticket-of-leave in 1844. I've asked an Australian friend to look for him in the 1828 Census of NSW (Nov 1828), where he should be - if he wasn't still on the run! Daniel left behind his wife and at least three children, of whom Alice b1818, the youngest, was my Gt-gt-grandmother. His wife Isabella died in Burnley, Lancashire in 1843, though he probably didn't hear that for a long time, if ever. I haven't yet found any evidence that he had children in Australia - but if he did, it would be great to make contact with his descendants. In any case, I should be most grateful for any advice or help on tracing Daniel's life in Australia. Andrew Bannister
