Wow, I wish I was as lucky looking for records of James Emms of the 39th Regiment of Foot. Was in Dublin c 1819 and came to Australia c 1826. I have perused the files in AJCP and sighted his paylists, but no regimental number and no way of finding when he enlisted, where he enlisted , his spouse and children. Records of the times, including diaries of his commanding officer and a letter written by James himself, refer to wife and children but no names or dates!!!! Still no information on which ship he and his family travelled. Nice to see that someone has some postitive results. regards Robyn ----- Original Message ----- From: "CandROverson" <overson12@btinternet.com> To: <aus-convicts@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, February 07, 2009 11:34 AM Subject: Re: [AUS-CON] RECORDS. > Hello Glenys > > This is a link to the online catalogue of the UK National Archives at Kew, > London. Hi Robyn Have you seen this? http://members.pcug.org.au/~pdownes/keenan/keenan_reg_history.htm This is an extract from a book published in 1853 about the 39th Regiment of Foot 1818-1832. It says that the whole regiment embarked for NSW from 1825 to 1827, as guards over convicts. It mentions one detachment embarked on the Woodman on 4 November 1825 to VDL and Sydney. You should read also the piece on that site about Michael Keenan, Soldier Settler, 39th Regiment of Foot. It has some interesting things to say about the regulations regarding the movements of wives and children.
