    3. I have been trying to research the NSW Gov Index of BDM but it seems to be off the air. I wonder can anyone help? Other researchers report that First Fleeters William DOUGLAS and Mary GROVES married in Sydney on 1 June 1788 and that their children included William George DOUGLAS or DOUGLASS, who, on 14 Nov 1814, had a daughter Mary Ann DOUGLASS with Mary Ann CROSS. Can anyone confirm this pedigree and throw any light on the apparent change of spelling in the surname, (DOUGLAS to DOUGLASS)? Bill Moyle

    3. Can't help with the pedigree but at that time the spelling was very much down to whoever happened to be writing the record so it could easily be different on every official document. 2. Hi Bill The DOUGLAS/S spelling continues to vary to this day. My mother was a DOUGLASS and always had to say - with 2 esses at the end. But many of our family documents have both spellings. As to why William DOUGLASS (Coromandel 1804) who married Mary Ann CROSS starting using George is another quandry. To my knowledge there were no surviving male children of the first fleet William DOUGLAS/S. Best source for this is the Jurd association and the First Fleet Fellowship. Many of the DOUGLAS/S and CROSS descendants can be found in the Forgotten Valley Mailing List or the Cross Flud/Flood mailing list. Just to add to the mix, it would appear that William DOUGLAS/S (Coro 1804) Had a son to Ann PEAT, yet another William DOUGLASS b 10 Jun 1809 Pitt town, christened presbyterian, 2 Mar 1829 Portland Head. Ref NSW BDM 16 vol 162 A. There is a paper called the Douglas Contovery by Carol Baxter, I would be happy to email you a copy if you are interested please contact me off list.
