Hello list, How do I get a copy of indents for the following convicts; Nathaniel Lucas Olivia Gascoyne Kennedy Murray Anne White? I am a descendant of all of the above and need to provide indents for the Descendants of Convicts Group in Victoria. Can anyone help me with where to start? Regards, Kay
Hi Joan, Do you have the Certificates of Freedom for your convicts? The TOL for my convict ancestor did not give a physical description but it was on his certificate of freedom, also on the convict indent for the ship. Hi Joan, I obtained a physical description of my Irish convict from the Shipping Indent. I am not sure if all Indents had the physical description added, especially not the earlier ones. You could try the new Convict list put online by the State Library of Queensland and see if your two are on it. If you do not live in Brisbane they will do this lookup for you - not sure how long it takes as they are always busy. http://www.slq.qld.gov.au/info/fh/convicts Carol
Hi Sue, Full Convict Lists for all the convict transports to WA are available online. These include physical descriptions and trial details for the convicts. This is on the Perth DPS website. http://members.iinet.net.au/~perthdps/default.html Fremantle Prison. This site has an online convict database which is searchable by surname or ship. A search returns detailed information on the convict including ship and arrival date, alias, birth date, marital status, occupation, literacy, religion, sentence details, crime and ticket of leave date. State Records Office of Western Australia online Collection Guides include Convict Records which details the downloadable indexes, by Anne and Bruce Buchanan, to a series of convict related letters in the correspondence of the Governor of Western Australia 1851-1868 The WA BDMs are also on line. If he married, had children or died in WA you should be able to find him. The State Library of Queensland have also just released online a convict data base with around 123,000 convicts of the 160,000 odd that were transported. I don't know if they have included WA ones but it would be worth a look at the SLQ website. Western Australian Genealogical Society has also put online Perth and WA Post Office Directories but your man might be a little bit early for them. Hope this helps, Carol
Hi I am researching one of my ancestors. John Patience (Pashen) was sent to WA and arrived in 1850 and was listed as WA Convict 2. Can anyone assist me with more information relating to John Patience. It would be appreciated. Regards Sue
Hi Peter, Further to Lesley's email if you live in what is described as "country" then the Queensland Library will do the research and send you the information. Not sure what they classify as "country" but I live about 40km north of Brisbane and they have been very helpful to me. Go to their web site www.slq.qld.gov.au and click on "ask a librarian" and this will take you. Hi again Kerry I think my last reply ended up blank again! I'm using a new email programme and I think I must be doing something wrong! What I intended to say was I decided to contact the Assoc of Scottish Genealogists & Researchers because I felt that in this instance I was probably better to use someone who could actually access the original documents. I really don't know if I would have got quite as much information otherwise (not necessarily knowing exactly what to ask for). I ended up with a copy of every piece of paperwork concerned with my ancestor's crimes before and up to her transportation. The only extra cost on top of the charges that the Archives Office make for the copies and postage was the researcher's time, in my case, one hour.
Hi, I have the Ticket of Leave for my 2 convict exile brothers, George Smith (William Reeves) TOL 49/105 12th June, 1849 Moreton Bay. Philip Reeves TOL 49/106, 12th June 1849 Moreton Bay. These men arrived on "The Hashemy" 1849. I do not have a physical description of these 2 exiles. The Old Bailey transcript did not provided this as well, so perhaps some Lister could advise me as to where I could search for this detail. Regards, Joan Barry
Thanks Rosemary....my convict's details are on the Scottish Archives site so it is only a matter of paying the relevant authorities. He also had many convictions by the times he was 18 and sent to Australia. Hi Peter I don't know where in Queensland you live, but you could try the Queensland State Library as they will have a full copy of the Convict Indents on microfiche. I have transcribed the convicts on all transports that arrived in Port Jackson. Is there one convict who is of particular interest? Some of the information available on the Indent for this transport is as follows: Ship Arrived Port Jackson From: Tons Master Surgeon Name Convict Number Where Tried When Tried Term Native Place Age Height Complexion Hair colour Eye colour Calling Crime Previous Convictions Education Religion Marital Status Family M/F Other Remarks Regards Lesley Uebel mailto:ckennedy@bigpond.net.au CLAIM A CONVICT http://users.bigpond.net.au/convicts/index.html -----Original Message----- From: aus-convicts-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-convicts-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of Peter Coleman Sent: Friday, July 11, 2008 7:31 PM To: AUS-CONVICTS@rootsweb.com Subject: [AUS-CON] Emma Eugenia, 1838, convict information Hi everyone, my name is Peter, would anyone of you kind people have a copy of the (convict) passenger list of the Emma Eugenia 1838 they could send me? Sorry about the blank email - must be the weather!!!! Seems I've managed to do this yet again. Here goes on the third attempt to send this reply!!!! I paid a researcher to do the searches and the cost of her time, photocopies of relevant documents and registered post was 70 pounds. (about $175 including bank charges for a cheque in sterling). Because she had a string of convictions there was a huge amount of information regarding what she stole, from whom, her next of kin, where she lived and was born, witness statements and the judgement and sentences - virtually all of it in original handwriting, which is sometimes difficult to read. I found the researcher on the internet. The transcripts didn't mention the ship or the date that it sailed but I already had that information.
Hi Rosemary I too am interested in the cost but your email had nothing. Only blank . Hi Annette, Have you looked at Peter Mayberry's 'Irish Convicts to NSW" website. It lists Thomas McKenna and also lists another contact for someone researching him. Hi Rosemary, I also have a Scottish convict. What was the amount in Aussie dollars that you paid for the transcription and does it state any relevant family members. I have just received 75 pages of transcripts from the National Archives of Scotlandfor six convictions leading to transportation to Van Diemen's Land in 1847 for my great great great grandmother, Euphemia Yule or Urquhart. It appears that her first three convictions were for stealing from her husband! Can anyone tell me if it was common custom for charges like that to be laid in those days (1839 -1847)? Also, on a copy of a page from the court records there are the names of two other prisoners convicted and sentenced to transportation - JAMES SPENCER for ten years and WILLIAM COCHRANE for seven years. Both to be held in the prison of Edinburgh until removed for transportation. If anyone is researching either of these names I will be happy to furnish them with a copy.
Hi Wayne and Di Yes, you really have to check all the different spelling variations that you can think of. Roberts surname, on the Indent for the 'Asia" is spelt Riches, as it also on his Certificate of Freedom. regards Lesley Uebel mailto:ckennedy@bigpond.net.au CLAIM A CONVICT http://users.bigpond.net.au/convicts/index.html -----Original Message----- From: aus-convicts-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-convicts-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of Dianne Tikira Sent: Thursday, July 10, 2008 11:31 AM To: AUS-CONVICTS@rootsweb.com Subject: [AUS-CON] Robert RITCHIE Hello all. We have a group of people researching Robert RITCHIE / Richards / Richey and his wife Ann. We know a great deal about Robert as we have been researching him for many years, and produce a newsletter called The Ritchie Researcher, and would invite anyone interested to email us and become a part of our group. Early on we believed he was Robert Ritchie who married Ann Kennedy in 1816. This Robert arrived in 1802 aboard "Hercules". This family is similar to ours but is not them. There were two Ritchie families around at similar times, but only this one is listed in the 1826 census under the spelling Ritchie. Ours appeared under RICHARDS. Our Robert Ritchie was born circa 1788. Anne MUNFORD/ MUMFORD was born circa 1787. They married in 1810. Their children were Rachel (Marr. Isaac HOLMES), Elizabeth ( Marr. William SMITH), Mary (marr. James POWELL), James (marr. Mary HOLLANDS), Sarah, Susan (marr. William JONES) Robert was a convict, arriving in 1822 aboard the Asia (2). We hope to be able to help anyone interested in any of these names. We descend through Susan and William JONES, and have others researching all the other lines as well. Wayne and Di Hoppe
