Hi again Rhonda, Correction to my last email, Mary Dargin Jnr who married William Lee was born in the colony. Her mother Mary Dargin was the convict. Mary Dargin Snr. (other names - HORNSBY and Jones) took over the Red Lion Inn at Windsor, NSW after the death of her husband in 1824. The licence was transferred to her and she retained it until her death in 1854. The Red Lion was one of the oldest hotels in Windsor and was situated in George Street. Mary was held in high regard in the Windsor region. Carol
Hello List I am a newbie and was wondering if anyone has done research on John Roberts per Prince George 1837 thanks Mark
Hi Rhonda, I am not sure if this is your man as it says he came on the Scarborough and not the Lady Penrhyn. Given that the names of the children are the same and he is the only James Lee I can find at that time I'd say there is a good chance he is yours. Says he married Sarah Smith on Norfolk Island. This information is from Scott Brown's CD Australian Colonists. Private - Royal Marines 35th (Portsmouth) Company Ship: Scarborough - 1788 Received 100 lashes for drunken insolence before arriving in NSW Sent to Norfolk Island 9 April 1792 - Enlisted in the NSW Corps. He was discharged exactly 5 years later William LEE was born 1 April 1794 at Norfolk Island Smith, Sarah Status on Arrival: Convict Ship: Lady Juliana - 1790 Born/Comments: Date: Abt 1761 Death/Comments: Sydney Town, Norfolk Island Date: 10 October 1804 Father: Mother: Convict Details Crime: Steal 2 silk handkerchiefs & 8 yards of ribdelure Sentence: 7 years Trial Court: Old Bailey Date of Trial: 2 April 1788 Spouse Details Record Name Date Place of Marriage 1171 Lee, James Norfolk Island August 1790 - Sent to Norfolk Island Children 1 Lee, William 7 2 Lee, Maria 8 The son William married a convict Maria Dargin at St Matthews Windsor and they had 12 children. I have their names if you are interested. Carol
Hi Lorraine The Indent for the "Surrey" 1831 states that James Bruce was 40 years of age when he arrived (that agrees with your year of birth). James was a Protestant and could read and write. He was a married man with 2 children. His native place was stated to be Arbroath (this is about 17 miles to the North East of Dundee). He gave his occupations as Seaman, Mill Wright and Labourer. He was tried at Winchester on the 28 February 1831 and received a Life sentence for robbing a pantry. It was his first conviction. On the 24th February 1847 James was recommended for a Conditional Pardon and he received it on the 1 March 1848 - No. 48/640. He was issued with a Ticket of Leave in 1840 No. 40/1690. On arrival he has been assigned to a Mr J. F. Hawkins of Bathurst and then had been assigned to Mr. A. K. McKenzie of Bathurst (according to the General Return of Convicts in NSW - 1837) A Mrs Sarah Bruce and 2 children arrived from Hobart on the Sir Thomas Munro (see Archives Office of Tasmania web site) - this ship left Hobart on the 11 February 1833. According to the Convictions web site the following people departed on the Sir Thomas Munro Sarah, James, Henry & John for Sydney in 1833. I am a little confused here as I do not know the names of the 2 children of James and Sarah. These people do not appear to have arrived IN Hobart on the Sir Thomas Munro so may have arrived on another ship. Hi List and Lorraine, A question if I may?? Did your James BRUCE also have a son James BRUCE in ? New South Wales? My (step) grandmother was Sadie Muriel BRUCE who was born in 1905 in NSW. I think the family then went to Victoria. She married my grandfather, Ernest Main Luttrell FORD in 1950. It was my grandfather's second marriage. Sadie's father was James BRUCE and her mother ........CRAWFORD. Regards Lynne in Tassie
Has anyone researched the "Lady Penryn" I am trying to establish if James Lee was a convict or mariner? He was sent to Norfolk Island with Lieutenant Phillip Gidley King to superintend the growing off flax, and he died in 1795, leaving the 2 children who were brought from Norfolk Island by the Rev. Henry Fulton. William was placed under the care of Lieutenant Cox and Maria under that of Surgeon Mountgarret. Maria Pantoney Lee married James Bellamy Bloodworth, who was the son of James Bloodsworth convict builder who constructed the first Government House. Cheers Rhonda

Hi Listers, Does anyone Know anything about JAMES BRUCE sent to Aust on the Surrey arr 1831 b 1791 London Or Scotland Married to Sahah Ann Burney. Hope you can help. Lorraine in wet sydney.
Thanks for all the ideas and information.. Looks like its back to the drawing board for me.. Thanks Lillian .................................................................................................................. John Scott arrived in Van Diemen's Land on the Eden (2) in 1842. He was tried in Nottingham Town Quarter Sessions on 4 January 1842 and arrived on 5 July 1842. He was sentenced for 7 years for stealing iron from the Station House yard. He was married (wife Margaret) and had thee children at Nottingham. He was a blacksmith aged 33 when he arrived but had been a soldier. He received his Certificate of Freedom in January 1849. You can get a copy of his records from the Archives Office of Tasmania: details at www.archives.tas.gov.au Dianne
Robert Scott, aged 51 years, died in the Benevolent Asylum in Sydney. He was free by servitude and he arrived on the 'Pilot'. He was buried on 12 February 1844 in the Parish of St James, County of Cumberland, by Rev M McEnroe, Roman Catholic. Can anyone tell me anything more about this Robert Scott? With thanks Dianne
Not necessarily back to the drawing board (unless the dates conflict with yours) ... the fact that he was married in England doesn't mean that he didn't marry again out here. I don't know what happened to John Scott who arrived on the Eden (2) after 1849, though. I can't see him in the Tasmanian Convict Permission to Marry Index. Best of luck!
