Dear Kim, My last email from you apart from this day was 5-08-08 is it possible that you could forward any emails from that date. Would appreciate that very much. I've manually resubscribed all 50-odd listers who were unsubscribed following bouncing emails through Optus. There have been no subsequent bounces or unsubs so Optus may have removed their blocks on Rootsweb traffic. To all our Optus addressed listers, welcome back. Or if Optus is still filtering Rootsweb traffic, maybe I'm just whistling in the dark. Kim List Admin
Hi Dennis You have already subscribed Dennis as you have managed to send a message to the Convicts List. Brilliant Thanks Leslie, with John Lawson aged 25 in the census of 1828; then the date of birth you have supplied makes a very suggestive of a connection. It seems pretty compelling that these were the famous Lawsons. It gives me just the necessary encouragement to pursue the link. Grateful to you once again Greg ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lesley Uebel" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, August 16, 2008 10:59 AM Subject: Re: [AUS-CON] John Bates > > > Greg > > The Indent states: > > Age is 20 - if you use a magnifying glass you will see the very feint > upswing to > the 2nd number. > > His native place does state Shropshire > > His occupation was Farmersman - written as Farmersm > > His crime was Housebreaking - usually shortened to Ho breakg > > The Indent also states that he had many warts on right hand and a raised > mole > under left ear. > > John Lawson was born in the colony in about 1803 - son of William and > Sarah. > William and Sarah had a number of children apart from Nelson and William > who are > noted in Lawson's bio at > http://www.adb.online.anu.edu.au/biogs/A020081b.htm > > regards > > Lesley Uebel > mailto:[email protected] > CLAIM A CONVICT > http://users.bigpond.net.au/convicts/index.html > > > > > -----Original Message----- > From: [email protected] > [mailto:[email protected]]On Behalf Of Greg Bugden > Sent: Saturday, August 16, 2008 10:10 AM > To: [email protected] > Subject: [AUS-CON] John Bates > > > Listers I have two research challenges regarding the convict, JOHN BATES > who > arrived on the Marquis of Hastings in July 1827. > > 1) I have seen the fishe of the Bound Indents for his arrival (fishe 665) > but it > is extremely difficult to read. Greg The Indent states: Age is 20 - if you use a magnifying glass you will see the very feint upswing to the 2nd number. His native place does state Shropshire His occupation was Farmersman - written as Farmersm His crime was Housebreaking - usually shortened to Ho breakg The Indent also states that he had many warts on right hand and a raised mole under left ear. John Lawson was born in the colony in about 1803 - son of William and Sarah. William and Sarah had a number of children apart from Nelson and William who are noted in Lawson's bio at http://www.adb.online.anu.edu.au/biogs/A020081b.htm regards Lesley Uebel mailto:[email protected] CLAIM A CONVICT http://users.bigpond.net.au/convicts/index.html -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]]On Behalf Of Greg Bugden Sent: Saturday, August 16, 2008 10:10 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [AUS-CON] John Bates Listers I have two research challenges regarding the convict, JOHN BATES who arrived on the Marquis of Hastings in July 1827. 1) I have seen the fishe of the Bound Indents for his arrival (fishe 665) but it is extremely difficult to read. I am new to genealogy and to this list My gg grandfather was David Kenny who came to Tasmania as a convict on the ship London in 1851. I have found a record of a David Kenny getting approval to marry an Elizabeth Smith in 1853 - I cannot find any record of offspring from this marriage nor any divorce. My gg grandmother was Bridget Kelly who came to Tas from Ireland with her parents (James and Mary Kelly) and two brothers on the ship Sir WF Williams. She and David Kenny are listed as the parents of my g grandfather (Thomas Kenny) but I can't find any record of a marriage. My questions are:- . Are these two David Kennys the same? . Did David Kenny and Bridget Kelly actually marry? . What happened to Elizabeth Smith? . What happened to Brdiget Kelly's parents and her two brothers? Will appreciate any help. Regards Doug Kenny

He was sent to Norfolk Island after being found guilty of 'violating an infant aged eight years'. I have not found anything of him at Norfolk Island site but have just found him listed on the Tasmania archive site. John Merchant, database no. 49155, date of arrival, 18 Nov 1845 per 'Governor Phillip', date of departure from NI, 1 November 1845. Arrived originally to NSW per 'Michael'. He was to 'spend the rest of his life at NI, never to return'. Hoping to find if he married and/or died in VDL. Regards, Lynette
Hi Listers, Can any lister advise whether a certificate of freedom was ALWAYS issued when a transported convict's sentence had expired? My GG grandmother's brother, sentenced on the Isle of Man 1833 and arrived in Sydney on the Mary Ann 1835 was issued with a ToL by the Muswellbrook Bench #44/1537 and allowed to remain in the District of Moreton Bay. His sentence would have expired in 1847. I have found no convict death in custody nor any other registered BMD associated with Thomas. I have found a Thomas LYNCH leaving on the Victoria for California in 1849, most probably for the gold. I have found nothing else. Cheers Peter Melbourne
Hi List Can anyone tell me what happened to John WILLIAMSON per Lady Kennaway 1835. I know that he absconded from a gang in 1839 with five others and became a bushranger. After a brief gunfight they were all captured and the other four sent to Norfolk Island in 1840. During the gunfight one of the convicts was shot in the shoulder. Was it WILLIAMSON? For some reason he seems to have been left in NSW. Was he the one shot? Did he go to Norfolk later on? He was a military convict transported for mutiny, does this have any bearing? Any help would be great Thanks Ian
