Hi John, Is it possible that he left an estate back in the old country and his death had to be registered there so that his estate could be dispersed? Just a thought. Wondering whether anyone has come across the event of a death in Australia also being registered in England? Have located the Registration of Death of John Francis as follows in the Free BMD Death Index 1837-1983: Estimated Birth Year: ABT 1833 Year of Registration: 1871 Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec Age at Death: 38 District: Ashbourne County: Derbyshire, Staffordshire Volume: 7b Page: 366 This registration is about 12 months later than the actual date of death in Australia however, age corresponds. I had been looking at my Australian ancestor as having been born in Derbyshire before being convicted and transported to Van Diemans Land, Australia. Any suggestions or comments would be much appreciated as well as what information might be gleaned should I order an actual Death Certificate. John Collins
Thank you Lesley :) I had just assumed they would have been transported together! I'm off to see what I can find. Hi cyn and list, Sorry for delay. Been AWOL a couple of days. Many many thanks for help with WELLS. Is there further info as this sounds like my William WELLS?. Also its about the only reference I've seen that mentions him on the Dromedary which is good. Another reference listed 'Globe' but have never been able to find anything. Is there also any information on Elizabeth ENO?. She is also from Lincolnshire and came to Oz on the "Lord Wellington" I think. She was born about 1799, died when 63 and was buried in St David's Park Cem.Tas. She was married to William WELLS and they had five children. Elizabeth married William SYKES on the death of William WELLS, which was abt 1830 and had another five children. Most sincere thanks again Regards Lynne in Taz
Hi Peter, This link has a bit of information on the Female Factory at Parramatta - http://www.parragirls.org.au/id2.html I couldn't find any information on inmates, but there is an ongoing research project on inmates, they may have more information if you contact them, or, alternatively maybe you would like to submit what you have on Sarah LYNCHEY and her children - info@parragirls.org.au Their Resources link has a lot of useful information for follow-up, including the book "These Outcast Women - The Parramatta Female Factory 1821-1848" by A. Salt. May I express my thanks to everyone who replied with helpful suggestions and advice, and for making me welcome to the list. I shall potter off, do some groundwork, and be back with questions! Margaret (Warwickshire)
Hi Kim, That is a very difficult question to answer with accurate figures and there are a few reasons for this: 1. Not every convict listed on the various Indents actually embarked 2. Many convicts are not included on the Indent for the transport on which they arrived 3. Some convicts are listed on two Indents - the one they were supposed to take and the one on which they actually arrived 4. Convicts on the same transport were offloaded convicts at various ports eg Port Jackson and VDL 5. Some convicts were transported to say, Port Jackson initially, and then were trans-shipped to other ports eg Norfolk Island and VDL and others shipped at a later date due to colonial crimes. 6. There are a few convicts whose arrival is not recorded on any incoming shipping document - some of these I found when they were granted permission to marry or received a Pardon etc, so I think that there must be others although I think that number would be very small. You cannot rely on the figures given in "The Convicts Ships" by Charles Bateson as he has not included about 100 ships carrying convicts to Port Jackson alone! .... nor was it his intention to include them. I know that I have transcribed (not copied and pasted) nearly 90,000 but this figure includes those to VDL up to early 1824 and to Moreton Bay. A rough guess is that of the over 160,000 transported (I have had to reply on the figures provided by Charles Bateson for numbers as regards convicts sent to Port Phillip, Norfolk Island, Western Australia and VDL as these are out of the area of my expertise) 50% to Port Jackson (including exiles some of whom were sent to Moreton Bay) 1.3% to Port Phillip 1.7% to Norfolk Island 6% to Western Australia .32% to Moreton Bay 41% to VDL Regards Lesley Uebel mailto:ckennedy@bigpond.net.au CLAIM A CONVICT http://users.bigpond.net.au/convicts/index.html -----Original Message----- From: aus-convicts-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-convicts-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of Kim Milne Sent: Sunday, October 19, 2008 2:13 PM To: List AUS-CONVICTS Subject: [AUS-CON] Convict numbers As a change of pace, does any of our knowledgeable listers have a reasonably accurate count of how many convicts was sent to each of the various establishments? Hi Listers, Are there any entry records for the Female Factory at Parramatta? One of my convicts, Sarah LYNCHEY-Mary III 1835- brought 3 children with her. One was named Mary Ann, my GG grandmother, from several years of research the others may have been Sarah and James. The Indent for the Mary III does not name them it simply states that they were on board. Given the regulations at the time the girls could have been no older than 12 years when they departed England and the boy 8 years. A request from the Isle of Man for her to take 3 children with her stated that the names were noted in the margin as was usual them. The copy on the Isle of Man does not include the names, nor does the approval from Lord Melbourne. The archives at Kew cannot find the original. I have checked Joan REESE's index of admissions to the orphan school and cannot find a LYNCHEY, nor a likely LYNCH. Would a convict woman be permitted to take 3 children with her to an assigned master? In this case a Henry FISHER a wine and spirit merchant in Princes St the Rocks (now covered by the approach to the Harbour Bridge). Any pointers to where I can look further or records of those who went to the female factory would be most appreciated. Cheers Peter Melbourne
Hi Kim, 2259 Males and 144 Females were sent to Moreton Bay in the Period 1824-1842 (as per JG STEELE's "Brisbane Town in Convict Days 1824-1842) Of these Approximately 220 died (anywhere up to 230) during that time frame. Regards Sue.

Hi Margaret I would suggest the following two books and you should be able to access them in England A.G.L. Shaw "Convicts & the Colonies" A study of penal transportation from Great Britain & Ireland & other parts of the British Empire. J. B. Hirst "Convict society and its enemies" Regards Lesley Uebel mailto:ckennedy@bigpond.net.au CLAIM A CONVICT http://users.bigpond.net.au/convicts/index.html -----Original Message----- From: aus-convicts-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-convicts-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of Margaret Usmar Sent: Sunday, October 19, 2008 1:38 AM To: aus-convicts@rootsweb.com Subject: [AUS-CON] Books suitable for beginner I have only just embarked on the convict research for my tree, and would appreciate advice from anyone who can recommend a reference title or two that I can use to read up on the subject. Hi Margaret I am sure you would find it helpful to have some back ground knowledge of early Australian history and geography and a decent map to study . There are 3 excellent novels I could recommend but to get benefit from these you need some knowledge as to why the fledging colony prison nearly didnt survive . Where are the Blue Mountains and why were they such a barrier ?? etc etc There is a deal of general NSW convict info to be found on http://users.bigpond.net.au/convicts www.records.nsw.gov.au have alot of indexes re convicts Google can find more ! There is also a lot of info in book form only and CD . I have alot of these at home . And books of specific parts of the convict era ............ eg on the First Fleet and Second Fleet and on the convicts on a particular transport ......... ' Convicts of the 'Lady Juliana' is one The 3 novels are ' the Fatal Shore' by Robert HUGHES, which deals with convicts to the Colony of NSW. ' The Potato Factory' by Bryce COURTNEY , about convicts in Tasmania . Morgan's Run by Colleen McCULLOCK about convicts sent to Norfolk Island . I stress all are novels Perhaps your local library might have something by historian Professor Geoffrey BLAINEY ? http://www.lib.monash.edu.au/blainey/ Or by Charles MANNING CLARK ? http://www.dinkumaussies.com/ACADEMIA%2FManning%20Clark.htm What is your convicts name ?
