    1. [AUS-CON] Final List of Convicts on board the Warrior hulk, Woolwich, 1851
    2. CandROverson
    3. Hi all This is the final group of convicts on board the Warrior hulk at Woolwich on the night of the 1851 Census. A few points to note: (i) I apologise to listers looking for convict ancestors from Scotland, Wales and Ireland, and hoping for town and county of birth. But census enumerators were not asked to include this information for those born outside England (in respect of the England census). (ii) the first names of convicts were not supplied, only the initial, and the initials S, T and J can look very similar in mid-19th century script, so errors may have crept in with those. Also N can look very similar to W. iii) I included a convict named M GILLOW (22, born Scotland) in my previous email on this topic. The name is actually M GILLON. And, finally, I have enjoyed doing this so much :-)) that idc I will be repeating this exercise with convicts on board the STIRLING CASTLE hulk in Portsmouth Harbour on the night of the 1851 Census. 3. Thanks Carol. One of the John Silcock`s mentioned applied to marry, so possibly it was the other John who could be the one i`m looking for. There`s always the possibility the one that married, remarried I suppose. I`m trying to make contact with a SILLCOCK descendant who may be able to fill me in on whether his g.g.grandfather was a convict, time will tell, that`s provided he knows of course. John married a Bridget O`SHAUGHNESSY in Melbourne in 1841. I was of the understanding that there were no convicts into Victoria during the transportation years. Could someone on the list advise whether that is true or not and if so, where might I look for the arrival of John SILLCOCK, possible convict. Norman A.

There are a range of James McCLELLANDs books in the reference section which I also checked as a matter of course as I have done many times before. The info is still conflicting but if youre serious in your research you need to check all available records How can history be out dated ? From memory the original publication of Charles BATESONs 'Convict Ships' book pre dates James McCLELLENDs books . Hopefully you dont dismiss that as 'too outdated ' What range of books particularly on convict records have you found that replaces Jas McCs efforts ?? Bye MargM Beautiful NSW Central Coast NSW

    1. [AUS-CON] Daniel CLIFFORD - brother and accomplice of Charles, transported 1845
    2. Lesley Albertson
    3. Hi Listers, Well, this is a *bit* of a complex trail ... but, is anyone researching this convict exile? *** http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/indexes/searchform.aspx Index to convict exiles, 1846-50 Surname FirstName Age Ship Year SailedFrom TrialShire TrialCity/Town TrialDate Sentence Charge TLDistrict Remarks CLIFFORD Daniel 19 Thomas Arbuthnot - - - Oxford Assizes 5/3/1845 10 yrs Burglary - The conduct of all these prisoners during their stay in Milbank Prison has been good; besides having learned to read and write well, they have made some progress in Arithmetic and all have been instructed in some useful trade *** He is the brother of Charles CLIFFORD - and although convicted at the Oxford Assizes, came from Milton, Berkshire, son of Bethia/Bithia and William CLIFFORD. Link is with my great-grandfather John BEASLEY, who was convicted of burglary at Milton in January1841 with Charles as his accomplice. Both were sentenced to transportation and incarcerated in the York Hulk - after which John was transported to Tasmania, per Tortoise, while Charles was "transferred to Penitentiary". Examination of the records does not reveal *why* this difference occurred ... but in any case, it did Charles no good, because some four years later, he was again convicted of burglary (along with his younger brother Daniel, and someone whose name appears to be William JEFFREYs). Help, anyone? Charles CLIFFORD was transported on the David Malcolm in 1845, and spent some time on Norfolk Island - from which he absconded. Would be fascinated to know if anyone is researching the CLIFFORD line - maybe we could organize a kind of Family Reunion, celebrating the nicking of the cheese, timepiece and other articles from the dwelling-house of John LAMPERT of Milton 8-) Cheers, Lesley (In sunny Melbourne)

    3. I have received in the last few days from a lady, of who I have had some contact, e-mails & mobile phone calls on my part about a book on Robert FORRESTER, 1st Fleeter and I would like to pass the news around and hope that if you have any connections to Robert that you get this book, and in the wake of the book "1788" from David HILL, & I quote from the e-mail.:- "Hi to all my 'Forrester' and general family history correspondents of the last decade - You may find it difficult to believe, but my biography of 'Robert Forrester, First Fleeter' has FINALLY been completed. Robert's story justified a book devoted solely to his life, so the extensive material I have unearthed about Robert's children will be published in a separate volume. The attached document, supplied in Word and PDF formats, contains information about the book and its publication details. I am considering a book launch event at The Rocks in Sydney on 27 January 2009 around 5.30pm, and you will be informed of this when plans are finalised. It was on that day in 1788 that the convicts from Scarborough came ashore in Sydney Cove. The book will not be available until mid January, but if you are thinking of a Christmas gift for someone, you could always insert the first two columns of the attachment into a Christmas card as a 'gift token'! Robert Forrester has thousands of descendants, most being unknown to me, so it would be much appreciated if you could include the details of this book in any relevant newsletters or websites in which you are involved, so that his descendants become aware that his life story has now been researched and told. Likewise, I would be most grateful for your co-operation in forwarding this email to any family members, friends or colleagues who may have an interest in purchasing the book at the discounted pre-publication price. Printing of the book, based on the level of pre-orders, will take place in the first half of January. It is a big relief to me that the book has reached fruition, especially as I am confident you will find that the book has been worth the long wait. There has been a very positive reaction from my reading panel. With best wishes Louise Wilson" End Quote. I will also attach the files to place your order for the book. Any further information that comes to hand I will pass it on as soon as I can. Regards, Steven C. I do have copies of the forms if people wish to order the book (in either Word Format or PDF files which can be downloaded from my website which is at the bottom of this e-mail and click on Others then Events then go to the bottom of the page and click on the links, where all the details will be.
