Hello, Sarah KING, age unknown, was convicted of being a "fence" at the Old Bailey on 20/08/1838, sentenced to transportation for 7 years and sailed for NSW aboard the "Planter" on 20/10/1838. Her co-defendant was George KING........son, brother or nephew, sadly the relationship is not explained.......and he was eventually transported on the "St. George" to New Zealand in 1842 as one of the "Parkhurst Boys" (not as an Apprentice but on license as a Free Immigrant). There is also the llkelihood that Thomas KING, also transported aboard the "St. George", was George's brother, although tried for a different offence 4 months later. No further details for Sarah KING have been retrieved, either in England or NSW. Can anyone help please? Phil, There were a lot of free settlers who arrived in the late 1820's and after that. You have not provided sufficient information to be able to assist. Phil A very very VERY approximate answer is that in 1840 1 in 2 would have non convict parents in the entire Country. See previous posting on Convict Numbers- 10/2008 In 1840 the (non native) population in NSW (Qld-1859 & Vic-1851 did not exist as separate states at this time) was on the order of 200,000. At this time the number of convicts total transported in the previous 52 years was about 110,000. Many would have died & or also had children. (who were classified as born free.) Note that in 1839, 1 yr earlier, the population was ~175,000, In late 1835 (when Melbourne was founded) only 113,000 in the Country. In 1831 (pop over 75000) NSW began assisted immigration. It was filling up fast. so an accurate number would be hard to come by. If you could find an early History of Melbourne settlers, (Founders Batman & Fawkner separately came from Launceston TAS.- Google "History Melbourne Aust") you might be able to get a better estimate, but differentiating between free settlers and freed convicts (some of whom became servants or farm/sheep workers) would be hard. Given that Melbourne was a free pastoral settlement, as opposed to Sydney, or Hobart, the chances are no doubt higher that an 1839-41 Melbourne born resident would have free settler parents. By 1837, there were 350 people and 55,000 sheep in the Melbourne area. (http://museumvictoria.com.au/marvellous/early/index.asp) Melbourne didn't boom until the 1850s gold rush. I found a comtemporary report (link below) on the 1851 convict mutiny on the Warrior hulk. It appeared in the Illustrated London News, and the attached is a truncated version of the report. It is quite revealing of the British establishment's views on transportation in the middle part of the 19th century. Thankyou for all replies.....my Patrick Whelan may or may not be a convict. I am checking all names within the years of 1840 to 1852 as I have never been able to locate a Patrick Whelan who fits the bill. My Patrick was born in Kilkenny. Kerry Just in case you don't know where Queen's Connty is/was (I didn't), it is in Ireland and was renamed Co Laois with Irish Independence in 1922. I looked up William Jardine (a very Scottish name) on the National Archives of Scotland online catalogue and came across one reference to a William Jardine between 1836 and 1838. This was the trial of a William Jardine in Dumfries for aggravated assault. He was convicted on 17 September 1836 at the High Court in Dumfries and was "outlawed and put to the horn". He had previous convictions for assault. It is just possible that he made the short boat trip to Ireland after his conviction. Gday Going back through the archives I noticed the above discussion, esp about letter "D" brandings on convicts. For what it's worth, a particular convict ancestor of mine, was a soldier, he had a "D" "under his left arm". Now this was a tattoo, not a branding. Speaking with an academic who has an interest in this subject, he suggested the "D" often stood for desertion, was usually a brand, and often placed on the _outer arm_. Given mine was heavily tattooed this may have been the only place left to make the "D" noticeable. It was interesting to read that another convict had a "D" under the armpit of all places. Regards Brent

Thanks Lesley, I checked the Tassie Archives and missed the two you mention. I made the mistake of spelling the name, SILLCOCK, not SILCOCK, hence I missed the two John`s listed. The Australian descendant`s spell their name SILLCOCK. One of the descendants spent the 2nd.World War in England in Lancaster bombers. He was telling me the other day that all the SILLCOCK`s he met in England spelt their name with one "S", so there`s a good chance that one of the John`s in Tassie was the original Aussie SILLCOCK i`m looking for.
