Hi Maddy That's correct. I just decided to check my copy of the Hawkesbury Pioneer Register and a couple of people have provided information about this family. Apparently Sarah Townsend married three times. George Spicer in 1855 Baron Burnett Cohen in 1876 Thomas Jenkins in 1885. This book also includes another daughter to William and Rebecca - Louisa who was born in 1847 - 14 child all up. Wow, I wish I was as lucky looking for records of James Emms of the 39th Regiment of Foot. Was in Dublin c 1819 and came to Australia c 1826. I have perused the files in AJCP and sighted his paylists, but no regimental number and no way of finding when he enlisted, where he enlisted , his spouse and children. Records of the times, including diaries of his commanding officer and a letter written by James himself, refer to wife and children but no names or dates!!!! Still no information on which ship he and his family travelled. Hi Lesley, Thanks for this information. I don't have much idea of Australian geography but you mention the Hawkesbury Pioneer Register - would that have a family called Alting in it by any chance? Charles Townsend Spicer (son of George Spicer and Sarah Townsend) married Gertrude Alting and they lived in Parkes. I was interested in the fact that Sarah married Baron Burnett Cohen because Charles and Gertrude called their first son Baron and none of his sons were given the name George. Hi Robyn Have you seen this? http://members.pcug.org.au/~pdownes/keenan/keenan_reg_history.htm This is an extract from a book published in 1853 about the 39th Regiment of Foot 1818-1832. It says that the whole regiment embarked for NSW from 1825 to 1827, as guards over convicts. It mentions one detachment embarked on the Woodman on 4 November 1825 to VDL and Sydney. You should read also the piece on that site about Michael Keenan, Soldier Settler, 39th Regiment of Foot. It has some interesting things to say about the regulations regarding the movements of wives and children. Thanks for your prompt reply, Ken. I have been researching my family for about 12 years but have only researched one convict previously and he turned out to be unlikely as my ancestor (he came to VDL). I have not done any research on convicts in NSW or the other colonies and have just begun to seek my granddaughter's maternal ancestry. Any advice re possible websites, etc would be gratefully received . I'm au fait with the tools available for general research.
