It's amazing where the descendants of the 'Princess Royal ' girls turn up. I am a descendant of Sarah Mortimer (from Brentford Middlesex). She came on the ship with her sister Maryanne. I was aware of the marriage of Jacob to Mary Hart and she must have died, possibly in childbirth. I knew nothing of Mary. I am waiting to see, from a marriage certificate whether Jacob = Job. I have been trying to research the NSW Gov Index of BDM but it seems to be off the air. I wonder can anyone help? Other researchers report that First Fleeters William DOUGLAS and Mary GROVES married in Sydney on 1 June 1788 and that their children included William George DOUGLAS or DOUGLASS, who, on 14 Nov 1814, had a daughter Mary Ann DOUGLASS with Mary Ann CROSS. Can anyone confirm this pedigree and throw any light on the apparent change of spelling in the surname, (DOUGLAS to DOUGLASS)? Bill Moyle
Can't help with the pedigree but at that time the spelling was very much down to whoever happened to be writing the record so it could easily be different on every official document. We have been seaching for Francis Cockrill CRAXFORD for some years. He was transported to VDL on the Norfolk, arriving 14 May 1835. We have been able to find out a little about him, and after serving his sentence there is a record of him going to Victoria. We have been unable to find any trace of him after that. If anyone comes across his name, in Victoria or elsewhere in Australia, other than VDL, I would appreciate if they could let me know. Reg Moore

There are some listings in the Pioneer Index : A Francis CROXFORD married Jane Underwood in 1875 his place of birth was listed as Oxfordshire; they had 4 children between 1887 and 1885 in Violet Town/Benalla. I can find no death fro Francis Croxford. A James CROxFORD married Charlotte PRoctor Burnell in Violet town in 1870.pob ENGLAND It is interesting that in Violet town in in 1893 a James CROXFORD died aged 77 est dob 1816. There is alarage family of CROXFORD's in the Violet town area in the indexes. Only 1 COCKRILL and it seems unconnected Willian Cockril IVES. I know CROXFORD is not CRAXFORD but my convict Godwin changed his name to GOODWIN when he came from Tasmania to Victoria, John Frederick became FREDERICKS, William Vickers became BICKERS. All names had only one letter altered, but research eventually sorted things out. regards Robyn ----- Original Message ----- From: "Reg Moore" <regmoore@paradise.net.nz> To: <aus-convicts@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, February 18, 2009 1:11 PM Subject: [AUS-CON] Craxford > We have been seaching for Francis Cockrill CRAXFORD for some years. > He was transported to VDL on the Norfolk, arriving 14 May 1835. > We have been able to find out a little about him, and after serving his > sentence > there is a record of him going to Victoria. I have located information that GEORGE HALL, convict No. 6029 was transported to Western Australia on the ship Lincelles which left Portland, England on 5 Oct 1861 bound for the Swan River Colony and arrived in Freemantle, Australia on 28 January 1862 to serve out his sentence. George was convicted of housebreaking in Glasgow Scotland in 1859 and received a sentence of 8 years to be served in the Glasgow Prison but was instead shipped to Australia. Information states his Ticket of Leave Date was 2 Aug 1862. Certificate of Freedom Date is listed as 19 Feb. 1868. Known areas Champion Bay. Comments Shepherd, shoemaker. To South Australia, 22 Mar 1877. How do I obtain copies of these documents? Would anyone have any information on George Hall's whereabouts after he was released from prison? Is he listed on census records? Did he return to Britain? When and how? Any information on or help in locating details would be appreciated. Eva Mitchell, Vancouver, BC. Canada
Jan, As it appears part of your second question has already been answered by the good folks above.. the date is the date of the ship departing from England.... most voyages from england took about 120 days. I think you can find out when it arrived here.. not sure where to look for that info though. Lesley Uebel might be able to help with more info on John CRANFIELD.. I am glad to have been able to help out a little.. apparently though I was very tired when I was looking at the BDM's duhhh me. Regards Sue.

Despite the kind efforts of a researcher in NSW, he cannot be traced. We know that he was back home with his family in 1826. Do you think that the lack of a record is absolute proof that he was not transported to Australia, Thanks Cliff Wheeler Barton on Sea, Hampshire
