    3. It looks highly likely that your Edward Neighbour was a "Pentonvillian" or "Exile". They were convicts who were trained in a trade in Pentonville and other UK prisons and then sent to Australia and given a conditional pardon on arrival in Melbourne. The condition was that they could not return to England until their original sentence had expired. In all other respects they were free. The Thomas Arbruthnot arrived in Port Phillip 4 May 1847 See "Convicts of the Port Phillip District" by Keith M Clark. If he was one of this group then you should be able to find him in that book. 3. Hi Leigh, There are probably several places you could search on-line. The State Records of NSW might have something on him. I just checked the Qld State Library website. You haven't stated how much info you have already but if it is only what you have stated in your email, I can add a little more. The British Convict Transportation registers at the Qld State Library website have the following info: Edward Neighbour one of 249 convicts on the Thomas Arbuthnot departed 6/1/1847. Convicted at Buckinghamshire, Aylesbury Quarter Sessions term 7 yrs. One curious notation was 'disembarked at Port Phillip (Melbourne) not VDL'. Perhaps the ship originally set out for Tasmania but decided for some reason to unload the convicts in Melbourne? Another lister may be able to shed some light on this. There are four other Neighbour convicts listed on the Tasmanian Archives website. James arrived 1835, John 1833, William 1843 and William 1834. Could they perhaps be related? 1. Re: [AUS-CON] First Fleeters: William DOUGLAS and Mary GROVES
    2. Hi Bill The DOUGLAS/S spelling continues to vary to this day. My mother was a DOUGLASS and always had to say - with 2 esses at the end. But many of our family documents have both spellings. As to why William DOUGLASS (Coromandel 1804) who married Mary Ann CROSS starting using George is another quandry. To my knowledge there were no surviving male children of the first fleet William DOUGLAS/S. Best source for this is the Jurd association and the First Fleet Fellowship. Many of the DOUGLAS/S and CROSS descendants can be found in the Forgotten Valley Mailing List or the Cross Flud/Flood mailing list. Just to add to the mix, it would appear that William DOUGLAS/S (Coro 1804) Had a son to Ann PEAT, yet another William DOUGLASS b 10 Jun 1809 Pitt town, christened presbyterian, 2 Mar 1829 Portland Head. Ref NSW BDM 16 vol 162 A. There is a paper called the Douglas Contovery by Carol Baxter, I would be happy to email you a copy if you are interested please contact me off list. 3. Thank you to Carol and Lyn for their prompt replies Lynne Hi Lynne, The Australian Joint Copying Project films have a section on convicts who were Court Martialled. There are 8 or 9 printed guides to using the AJCP and from my rather poor memory I think it was in Volume 8. The guide will give you the film number you need and then you can order the film through inter library loan from the National Library in Canberra. The Queensland State Library hold the guides and the films if you happen to be in Qld. 3. Re George Morgan & William Morgan. Thankyou for your response. Lesley & Lyn. I do know there were many persons by these names who came to Australia. My grandfather had researched them back in the 1950's and his notes showed a reference to; George Morgan (came free) aged 15yrs ,Profession Brickmaker arrived Oct 1791 on the "Albemarle" the same ship that carried his prospective father-in-law the convict Edward Collins and his wife Elizabeth who gave birth to the daughter Ann Collins in the waters off Sydney hds. George and Ann were married ? 1806/7 ( no record found to date). Ann was 16yrs and George 30yrs ( they had 15 children) We do have copies of their death certs. ( Ancestry docs re Australian Convict Transportation 1791-1868 ref HO11/1 shows both William and George Morgan as convicts 7yrs terms 1796&1797 ship Albemarle) Also reference to both William and George on the QLD site. Further research showed a George Morgan convict arrived the Canada Dec 1801 also Brickmaker and it is this G. Morgan that has been accepted in the families history. My problem is that records pop up with reference to "William Morgan" and we haven't yet been able to find parents for the George Morgan's !!! Hence I am ever doubtful and still searching for answers. I have been researching for well over 30yrs myself and am currently helping with the updating of our Family's Story " A Colonial Brickmakers Family" . Any further help would be gratefully received . He was given a Court Martial at Chatham on the 15 Sept 1818 and sentenced to 14 years. Can SKS please point me in the right direction. He was given his Certificate of Freedom on 15 Apr 1833. Thanks Lynne
