    1. [AUS-CON] RICHARD CHAPMAN-COROMANDEL 1820-POSSIBLE DEATH IN CUSTODY
    2. Peter Strauss
    3. Hi Listers, Is there any index available of convicts who died in custody please? Richard CHAPMAN was sentenced by the Middlesex Jury in April 1819 to life. He was on the same ship, Coromandel, as my GG grandfather George DUDLEY who later assumed that name "CHAPMAN" as an alias although he reverted to DUDLEY and later called himself George Chapman DUDLEY although this last did not appear in records until his marriage in 1858. DUDLEY may have assumed this name if he knew that Chapman had died. If there is an index where would it be available please? Cheers Peter Melbourne

    3. Hi Thanks Jan for that information. Have seen all the records that are in Australia, (I think) but none that I have seen give his offence. I googled "Chester Great Sessions" and found a very informative website, that may be of use to others. http://www.earlymodernweb.org.uk/waleslaw/gfintro.htm It has a searchable database, but unfortunately my man was not there. I don't think it is completed yet, but it is certainly worth taking a look if your convict came from Wales. 3. Annette Just in case you are not already be aware of the information in the Tasmanian archives you might like to check there. http://www.archives.tas.gov.au/ I found his record on the Conduct Register (Item No: CON31/1/13 - image 145). It seems he was granted conditional emancipation (1437) on 7 August 1821. Unfortunately his crime is not reported - only the life sentence which was apparently imposed on 13 January 1801. The records of the Chester Great Sessions seem to be held at the National Archives at Kew. I have had a quick look at the catalogue and the records are listed within series CHES; http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk If you are not planning a trip to Kew yourself you might be able to get someone to do the research for you - the National Archives website has some links to professional researchers. There would no doubt be a fee, however, I don't think it would actually take very long to do, especially as you have the approximate date and place of the trial. 2. If your convict is from Wales it's also worth looking at   http://www.llgc.org.uk/sesiwn_fawr/index_s.htm   index of all Great Sessions (sesiwn fawr) cases in Wales from 1730 - 1830.  Includes people resident in England but accused of crime in Wales.  Much of North Wales was on the Chester Circuit.   Nothing there for John Gee I'm afraid.  Several for a Daniel Gee, from Chester.   I have a CD-ROM which gives names for 1706-1800 Denbighshire Quarter Sessions Rolls if anyone has a look-up they want there.  Gives name and crime, sometimes sentence.   Chris           Chris.   --- On Sat, 14/3/09, Annette Cooke <kacooke@smartchat.net.au> wrote: From: Annette Cooke <kacooke@smartchat.net.au> Subject: [AUS-CON] Chester Great Sessions To: aus-convicts@rootsweb.com Date: Saturday, 14 March, 2009, 12:49 AM Hi Listers I have a convict, John Gee, who was convicted at the Chester Great Sessions for Life, leaving England in September 1802 on board the Glatton. 3. Yes, they did. A holder of a Ticket of Leave was still a convict therefore had to apply for permission. An ex-convict in receipt of a Pardon (Absolute / Conditional) or a convict who had served their sentence and in receipt of a Certificate of Freedom did not have to apply. regards Lesley Uebel mailto:ckennedy@bigpond.net.au CLAIM A CONVICT http://users.bigpond.net.au/convicts/index.html -----Original Message----- From: aus-convicts-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-convicts-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of Gavin and Marites Spicer Sent: Wednesday, March 11, 2009 10:51 PM To: aus-convicts@rootsweb.com Subject: [AUS-CON] Permission to marry Hi Can some body out there please assist.
