    3. Is there any significance in the first approval being given on Christmas Eve in 1839. Maybe the religious days prevented them from marrying that year and they had to reapply in the New Year 1840? Just a thought. I do not know if this is the sort of thing that could happen or not. I've hit a bit of a brick wall with my research into Thomas WOOTTON and his wife Mary O'DONNELL. I've been able to find most of the information I need about Thomas (except what he was convicted of at the Stafford Quarter Sessions on 15 Oct 1823). Information for a published source ie Manning Wallamba Family History Society Inc, Pre 1860 Pioneer Register, 2004 states that Mary O'DONNELL was transported on the Sir Charles Forbes from Ireland on the 11th of August, 1837 arriving in NSW on the 25th December 1837. However, I've been unable to find her in any of the records I have on hand. To further complicate things, I have two records from Registers of Convicts' Applications to Marry, 1825-1851 1. Thomas WOOTTON (age 40) sentanced 7 years, transported on the Countess of Harcourt 1824 to Mary O'DONNELL (age 21) sentanced 7 years, transported on the Sir Charles Forbes 1837 Permission to Marry - 24 Dec 1839 - Port Macquarie 2. Thomas WOOTTON (age 40) sentanced 7 years, transported on the Countess of Harcourt 1824 to Mary O'CONNELL (21) sentanced 7 years, transported on the Sir Charles Forbes 1837 Permission to Marry - 21 Jan 1840 - Port Macquarie Now, I know these are somewhat common names, but it seems unlikely for two such similar pairings to occur. I think they are the same couple, but why would they get permission twice? And why the differences in names for Mary? I've been trying to track down Mary and have checked under both names but haven't been able to find any records for her. Is there anywhere online that I can check who was on a specific ship for a specific trip? I need online as I don't have access to any of the CD's that this sort of thing is usually on. These are my only convict ancestors, so it's all new territory to me, so any suggestions are welcome. Cheers, Michelle

    3. Hi Janice The Indents are available on microfiche and are available at many large libraries in NSW, many State Libraries and probably at some family history groups etc. The Col. Sec. films are part from the ARK series of films produced by the NSW State Records, and again are available at many large libraries. It is best to check these as sometimes you will find the information on the Index is in error. You could also check the post 1825 Col. Sex. Index produced by Joan Reese..... available on microfiche Although he was assigned to Joseph Onus in 1822, that does not mean that he stayed with him for any length of time. The type of information you will find on the Indent for his transports is as follows: Ship .. Elizabeth I (3) Arrived Port Jackson .. 30 December 1820 From: .. England Tons .. 482 Master .. William Ostler Surgeon .. Samuel Alexander Name .. Yes Convict Number .. No Where Tried .. Yes When Tried .. Yes Term .. Yes Native Place .. Yes Age .. Yes Height .. Yes Complexion .. Yes Hair colour .. Yes Eye colour .. Yes Calling .. Yes Crime .. No Previous Convictions .. No Education .. No Religion .. No Marital Status .. No Family M/F .. No How disposed of .. No Other Remarks .. No TOL/CP/AP .. Yes Colonial Sentence .. No Ticket of - Leave / Exemption .. No Pardons - Conditional / Absolute / Colonial .. No Certificate of Freedom .. 3. Hi Debbie, Do you know about Peter Mayberry's website about the Irish Convicts to Australia: http://members.pcug.org.au/~ppmay/cgi-bin/irish/irish.cgi I found that the William Kelly who came on Larkins in 1829 was from Cork City and was sentenced to Life for stealing wine from his master. That William Kelley received his certificate of freedom on 30/4/1836 - online index NSW state records. I think you can look at the microfilm at State Library in Macquarie Street or any library holding the ARK records and find more details where it was issued etc. There is no record of a petition to send out his first wife on the Irish National Archives site. The thing about this William Kelly which makes it a bit doubtful is that his native place is Cork City and on your death certificate it says Limerick. Maybe he was born in Limerick and lived in Cork after childhood? Someone once told me it is very hard to trace births in Ireland. You could try http://ifhf.brsgenealogy.com/index.php this site lets you make free searches but with a common name like William Kelly it would be hard to find the right one without a parish name to narrow it down. Coincidentally (or not?) there are 2 Condons, William and Patrick, also on Larkins in 1829 and also from Cork city. Can't really help with definite matching of parents to convict. You were lucky to get their names on the death certificate. 3. Hi I am trying to find information on Robert Lovelock's application to marry in 1847 to Jane Curry (Currie). He was a convict arriving in Australia on the Andromeda 1833. I have had a search at state records in the application to marry for convicts but he is not there. and on his ticket of leave recommendations for a conditional pardon is not until the 1850's. So as he is still considered to be a convict with a ticket of leave I am assuming there must be an application to marry some where. Could some kind person please point me in the right direction. I am interested in the age stated for Jane Curry when the application was submitted. Thank you. Kind Regards Gavin

    3. Hi Lesley Yes he did go under James as well which is a little difficult and apparently he was the older of the two who arrived on the Parmelia. 3. Hi Debbie Do you mean that he arrived on the Parmelia (2) in 1834 - there were two by that name who arrived on that transport. It appears as though he went by the name of James Kelly also...... so you may have to go through a process of elimination regards Lesley Uebel mailto:ckennedy@bigpond.net.au CLAIM A CONVICT http://users.bigpond.net.au/convicts/index.html -----Original Message----- From: aus-convicts-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-convicts-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of Debbie & Rick Wright Sent: Tuesday, March 17, 2009 11:58 AM To: AUS-CONVICTS@rootsweb.com Subject: [AUS-CON] William Kelly Hi all Is there anyone who can share any info on the following. 1. [AUS-CON] LOOK UP AT NSW STATE RECORDS
    2. Peter Strauss
    3. Hi Listers, Could some kind lister who is going to Kingswood, and has the time, look something up for me please. I am seeking a discharge date from Cockatoo Island for a convict George DUDLEY alias George CHAPMAN. DUDLEY/CHAPMAN was in the first batch of convicts sent to the island in 1839. He was certainly free by May 1841 as I have found a permission to marry on 16/05/1841 which states he was free. What I wish to establish is when he was granted his freedom. The record details I have found on the State Records site are: Series # 12216 Descriptive Note:- 4/4540; microfilm copy SR Reel 605 If anyone can check this for a reference I will be able to order the appropriate record from the State Records Office. Cheers Peter Melbourne
