Yes Syd, You can add information if you want to, personally it has been a long time since I have been able to get caught yo with my Family Tree information. I had to move over 7 years ago and all of thenotes related to my work are at my sister's house because they will not fit into this tiny place I am living in. I will be interested to see what you can add to the information, Susan. ________________________________ From: Kim Milne <rags@arach.net.au> Sent: Sunday, 9 February 2020 2:11 PM To: List AUS-CONVICTS <AUS-CONVICTS@rootsweb.com> Subject: [AUS-CON] Forwarded message Hello Susan Syd Ryder this end from Down Under I have just come across your page on Roots web I was interested to see three people noted Edward Smith, Mary Ann Ryder and Thomas Reeve in the 1818 Warwickshire Assizes can I take up your offer of supplying any additional information on them. From my limited research (can't access Warwickshire paper archives from where I am) Edward Smith came as a convict on the Shipley, oddly later descendants married into a Ryder family (not mine) but there was a Mary Ryder and Reeve connection not certain of their location could have been in Essex or Cambridgeshire. In the event of the closure of our list I've created an AUS-CONVICTS list on the groups.io platform & several listers have already signed up. To make it easiest to transfer over I intend to send an invitation to every existing AUS-CONVICTS subscriber from the list to join https://groups.io/g/AUS-CONVICTS The message will carry my name in the invitation. Those wishing to subscribe to the new list will need to click on the " accept the invitation" link in the message. Those of you who have already signed on will need to do nothing more & can just ignore the message altogether. Kim List Admin
Thank you. Although I'm only a lurker most of the time I've learned a lot from the group and appreciate having this new site. Many thanks. With the demise of the Rootsweb list I would urge our host to consider "Groups IO" Hugh, the host of the NZ list has been proactive and generated a new list on "Groups IO" Many have joined already. I note that Nivard Ovington has joined and has recently suggested to the Mariners list that they consider IO too. You will be aware that wise genealogists open their ears when Nivard has something to say. My concern is that many of us subscribe to a number of common lists and have almost become family. It would be a shame for individual lists to fly off in different directions. We will be stronger if we stick together. I am far from an expert but I understand IO is easy to use and has some advantages. Attachments/Photos!!!!! Murray NZ

Thomas Power was resident in Bathurst when granted his "Ticket of Leave" (38/826) in May 1838 and his "Ticket of Freedom" (40/1578) in September 1840. It is said that Power was sent to NZ to meet Lt. Gov. Hobson at the Bay of Islands by the Gipps NSW Colonial Government. Hobson arrived at the end of January 1840 and barely a week later signed the "Treaty of Waitangi" Power later became a courier for Hobson in Auckland, and c1846 was sent to the Waikato to instruct Maori in modern English agriculture. Gov. George Grey arranged for him to work under the Rev J Morgan at Te Awamutu, supplying horses ploughs etc, and arranging for his salary of one guinea per week. Power married a local Maori woman, Rahapa te Huauta who bore five children. It seems to me unusual for him to be able to leave Australia before his "Freedom was granted. I would also like to research Colonial Govt. records to ascertain whether this story stacks up. If Colonial Governments were proficient at anything it was creating written records. Advice appreciated please as to how one manages such research. Murray Reid Cambridge NZ
Some information for everyone. Transportation was almost at an end in the eastern colonies by 1849, except Western Australia, until 1868. The "Eden" was the last or nearly last ship with exiles or Pentonvillians on board. Newspapers for the month of February 1849, indicate the "Eden" went to Hobart then Geelong to disembark the exiles. They were allowed to obtain paid work until their sentences were completed. I read a few years ago that some convicts were granted a pardon as soon as they arrived in the last year of transportation, not sure if this was NSW in 1842 or Victoria. Newspapers report that 200 prisoners arrived in Hobart Town end of January 1849 and are to be forwarded to Port Phillip arriving 5 Feb 1949. Some reports have 233 prisoners before Hobart and 199 prisoners at Port Phillip,
