    3. Howard Wright Atwood The Akron Beacon Journal <www.ohio.com> 4/3/2008 TALLMADGE -- Howard Wright Atwood, 85, passed away April 1, 2008. Howard was born on the farm that his great-great-great-grandfather, Richard Fenn bought from Colonel Benjamin Tallmadge in 1818. He graduated from Tallmadge High School in 1941 and served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. Howard graduated from Kent State University in 1948. After Howard returned from the service and finished college, he was interested in building homes as a business. Atwood Construction was formed and the early projects at the beginning of the 1950's were: 25 houses on Stadium Dr.; four on Kent Dr.; seven on Outlook; four on Nottingham; ten on Highland Dr.; and five on Parmelee. In addition, homes were built on the east side of Ernest Dr. and later the major development of the family farm, called the Stillmeadow Estates. The Akron Home Builders Association purchased part of the Stillmeadow Estates land for the 1963 Parade of Homes. Howard continued to be a land developer, sales company and home builder, buying land and developing throughout Tallmadge, some of which included Regency Park, Pheasant Run, Starrline Dr., and Indian Parks Dr. He also developed land in the Brimfield area. In 1963, Howard became a member of the Board of Directors of the Falls Savings and Loan Bank in Cuyahoga Falls. During his tenure on the Falls Savings Board, he completed many appraisals for the bank. In 1973, he was elected Chairman of the Board and in 1987, Chief Executive Officer for the Falls Savings and Loan Bank. In 1989, Falls Savings and Loan was acquired by Fifth Third Bank. Howard was a member of the Akron Area Board of Realtors and the Home Builders Association of Greater Akron, a life Director of the National Association of the Home Builders and past Trustee of the Akron Regional Development Board. He also served on the Tallmadge Planning and Zoning Committee. Howard was honored in 1999 by the Chamber of Commerce for 50 years of continuous business in Tallmadge. He also was a member of First Congregational Church of Tallmadge. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest Sackett and Geneva Wright Atwood; brother, Walter G. Atwood; and sister, Jeannette R. Parks. He is survived by his wife, Joann; daughters, Loraine (James) Ingrasci of Buffalo, New York, Michelle McGuire of Tallmadge, and Diane L. Smith of Austin, Texas; stepsons, Fred Kalail of Tallmadge, Scott Kalail of Akron, and Kraig Kalail of Brimfield; grandchildren, Jennifer, Katherine, Meghan, Dustin, Erica and Sarah; sister, Carolyn (James) Mackey of Tallmadge; and sister-in-law, Harriett G. Atwood of Tallmadge. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, April 5, 2008 at First Congregational Church of Tallmadge, 85 Heritage Dr., Tallmadge, with Rev. Dr. John Schluep officiating. Interment will be at Tallmadge Cemetery. Friends may call 4 until 8 p.m. Friday at the Donovan Funeral Home, 17 Southwest Ave. (On the Historic Tallmadge Circle). Memorial donations may be made to First Congregational Church of Tallmadge or to the charity of your choice.
