Shirley was 75, born during the Great Depression, and reared amidst the turmoil of World War II which instilled in her the moral fiber, patriotism and tenacity which she exhibited throughout her life. Always self-sacrificing, Shirley cared very deeply for her children and family and put them first in all things. Shirley loved birds and flowers and had a marvelous green thumb. It was said that she could make anything grow. Her lush garden in bloom was always a magnificent triptych of color. She loved a good laugh and despised rude behavior. She was a volunteer for the Iberville Parish Historical Society, opening her home on countless occasions for fund-raising events. An active member of Daughters of the American Revolution, she took great pride in her work with friends there. Shirley confronted her illness that overcame her with dignity and the grace which characterized her life. She is survived by Vernon Atwood Jr., her husband of 54 years; her two sons, three granddaughters, two grandsons and nine great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by her mother and father, two sisters and a beautiful great-granddaughter. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her and loved her.
