Press-Telegram <www.presstelegram.com> 23 December 2008 Wright MacVar Atwood 1923 - 2008 Wright Atwood, 85, passed away peacefully on December 19, 2008. Wright was born on November 26, 1923, at Seaside Hospital, Long Beach. He grew up in Vermont and moved back to Long Beach with his family and attended Lindbergh Jr. High School, Jordan High School, class of 1941, and Long Beach City College. In 1942, Wright enlisted in the Army/Air Force and was sent to the Philippines. He served in combat as a radio gunner on a B-24. After the war, Wright attended Whittier College and then went to graduate school at USC. In 1948, Wright began a lifelong teaching career at Jordan High School. In 1951, he was recruited to teach at Long Beach City College where he was a professor for four decades. While at LBCC he was Associated Men Student Advisor, Tillsman Advisor, and Dean of the Social Science Department. He often stated that these were his most fulfilling years and he hoped that his impact was felt by all of his students. Wright always enjoyed meeting his former students and hearing about their accomplishments. He married Marian Soyster on September 3, 1950. Wright is survived by his wife Marian of 58 years; his daughter, Susie; his son, Scott; and his three grandchildren, Christopher, Sean, and Kimberly. A celebration of his life is planned for Friday, January 9th, 2009, 2pm at Alamitos Bay Yacht Club. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Long Beach City College Foundation and/or the Long Beach City College Athletic Department
