The Morning Sentinel <morningsentinel.mainetoday.com> 4 January 2009 Richard Lawrence Atwood BENTON -- Richard Lawrence Atwood, 65, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2008, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Waterville. Dick was born Jan. 16, 1943, in Portland, the son of Reginald and Lucille (LeBlanc) Atwood. He graduated from Bingham High School in 1962. Dick was a standout athlete in both baseball and basketball. He also played semi-pro baseball with the Auburn Aces. He received his sheet-metal apprenticeship in Connecticut and worked with his apprenticeship at Hannel Bros. in Lewiston. Dick went on to work at International Paper in Jay. Later he joined Neokraft Sign Co. and eventually opened his own sign business, A & J Sign in Waterville. Because of failing health, he closed his business and semi-retired. He continued to work part time with his sons at Northern Signs in Fairfield. Dick was an avid Red Sox and Valley High School sports fan. Throughout his children's younger years, he very much enjoyed coaching all of his children in their sports. As his children grew and had families of their own, Dick loved watching all of his grandchildren play their sports. Everyone that knew Dick loved him. Dick had many friends throughout the state with whom he kept in touch through the years. Dick was well known for his fantastic sense of humor. He loved to joke around and make people laugh. Dick was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Roberta (Frost) Atwood; his siblings and their spouses, Betty Harmon of Bingham, Donald and Margie Atwood of Bingham, David Atwood of Canaan, Gary and Connie Atwood of Bingham and Barbara and Greg Coolidge of Etna; his children and their spouses, Mark and Laura Atwood of Fairfield, Mike and Tracey Atwood of Albion, Jill and Dan Sadler of Sidney, Wendy Atwood and her companion, Tim, of Portland and stepson Chris Frost and wife Jennifer of Gorham. He will also be sadly missed by his grandchildren, Matthew, Stephen, Kelsey, Skye, Kayla and Asia. Many nieces and nephews will greatly miss Uncle Dicky. He is also survived by a very special uncle, Clifford Atwood, who he enjoyed spending time with in Bingham and at Donny's camp this past summer. Dick also leaves behind his kitty, Baby. The family would like to send specials thanks to the Fairfield Rescue and the MaineGeneral emergency room. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, at Skowhegan Federated Church, 13 Island Ave. in Skowhegan. Spring burial will occur at Robinson Cemetery in Moscow.
